Tips To Relieve Lower Back Pain

Learn how to get rid of your lower back without surgery!

by Kris Bickell

You just finish a stressful day at work. You get home and you've got some pain in your lower back. What should you do?

Muscle strain, ligament spasms, and slipped discs are three of the most common back injuries. They can occur at any time, without warning. Doing activities that you are not really used to doing, like lifting heavy items, are a common culprit. But standing or sitting for long periods of time, or sudden movements like a sneeze or a quick turn, can also lead to pain.

So, what should you do to relieve lower back pain?

Getting some rest and relaxation are a good starting point. And if the pain continues or gets worse, check with a doctor or back specialist. Here are some more tips to help you out:

* One of the best ways to relieve low back pain is to lie down on the floor with pillows beneath your knees while your hips are curved and your feet raised. This helps take the pressure off of your spine.

* An ice pack is often helpful for reducing the inflammation in your muscles. TYpically people use heating pads, but ice is usually the best choice for immediate pain. A nice massage can also be very helpful.

* There are pain relievers that can be purchased over the counter without a doctor’s prescription. And there are natural pain relievers you can find in your health food store.

* If the pain persists, and especially if it gets more serious, you should consult with a physician. Here are some signs that professional help is needed: numbness, fever, nausea, weakness and losing control.

* Losing weight can also be an immense help. While this won't provide you with immediate relief, it is a very wise long-term strategy. Because being overweight puts added stress on your spine. you should also focus on improving your posture when sitting, standing or sleeping.

* Light exercises will also assist in low back pain relief. And walking is a great way to get statred, espcially if you can do it without any problems. Make sure you wear comfortable clothing and use a good pair of walking or running sneakers, which help with cushioning.

Many people make the mistake of thinking that once the pain is gone that the problem is solved. Sadly, this isn't always the case. So make sure to keep working on your back health even after the pain has ended.
