A Personal California Wine Experience

by Jack Terry

It is almost impossible to say for certain how many wineries there are in California because the number keeps changing. The fact that it takes several years for grape vines to take root and begin to produce mature fruit would seem to make unexpected wineries nearly impossible, but one of the growing trends these days are vineyards that previously grew grapes for other wineries now opening small batch wineries of their own. In some cases, they are vineyards that have been in a family for generations, and having grown up around grapes, the newest members are looking to try their hand at making their own wines. Other vineyards are being discovered by longtime winemakers who are looking to create a new line that focus specifically on a certain varietal or region.

Whatever may be driving this new boom in the wines and wineries of California, it is safe to say that even if there were a definitive number of wineries to choose from, it would be impossible to visit them all in a normal lifetime. In years past, that would be a disappointment to wine lovers across the country. Many of the wineries of California do not produce wine on a scale that allows for national distribution, so if a person wanted to experience their wine, they would have to make the trip to them. These days, that is no longer the case thanks to the growth of wine of the month clubs. A growing popularity in wine is only one of the factors that came together at the right time to create the perfect business climate for wine clubs to flourish. Many states have relaxed their laws when it comes to delivering mail to personal addresses, and they also see supporting small batch wineries, distilleries and microbreweries as a way to support small business. With all of these factors in place, instead of having to go to California for the wine, people can now have the wines of California come to them.

Although each wine of the month club has a different focus and area of expertise, most of them work around the same principle. They offer a variety of membership levels that cover a range of styles, varietals and number of bottles each month. Having this array of options lets them appeal to first time wine drinkers who are just getting started, as well as to long time oenophiles looking to complete their collection or experience a rare vintage. Not only do these wine clubs benefit their members, they also are usually the first national exposure many of these wineries receive. Most people who enjoy wine dream of a trip through California wine country. Even if the budget does not have room for airfare and hotels, today's wine of the month clubs can give people that same personal experience from the comfort of their own home.
