Gift Wrapping

by Ron Maier

The art of gift-wrapping began more than 600 years ago in Japan. During ceremonial gift exchanges, nobility used the finest papers and packaging to show respect to those receiving a gift. To the Japanese culture of 600 years ago, the wrapping was just as important as the gift inside. Handmade bows and origami folds proved to the recipient that the gift was truly from the heart of the giver. Gift-wrapping of today shares the same roots as this Japanese ancestor. The presentation of a gift prepares the way for the gift itself. Any retailer during the holidays should realize the importance of this traditional connotation. Beautiful wrapping and ribbons will bring a new level of visibility to your products, giving your store more recognition from consumers and supplying them with a helpful holiday service. Creating a gift-wrapping department or service in your retail store broadens your image and personality. No doubt, this service saves your customers a tremendous amount of precious time and money during the holidays. Not only that, but it gives them an elegant product to give to their friends or loved ones. In one stop, they have a gift really worth giving, one that stands out from the rest. First, choose your wrapping. You must decide on stock paper or custom paper. Stock paper is abundant, but is limited to a small selection of colors and patterns, while custom paper has endless possibilities of uniqueness. Quality wrapping paper surely creates a lovely presentation, but depending on your pocketbook and commitment to wrapping, stock paper will work just fine. Some gift presentation programs include boxes that are pre-wrapped. This can take some stress off employees and also provides a faster service. Pre-wrapped boxes are either regular-wrapped with a lift off cover or a “bundle-wrapped” box, which gives a more hand wrapped appearance. Some retail stores double wrap these boxes to make a layer of wrapping that is quite pretty as the gift is unwrapped. Whatever you decide, decorations are the next step to designing your gift-wrapping style. There are endless decorative options for your unique gift-wrapping department. Drawstring pouches, flap flannel pouches, fabric-covered hinged boxes, gift bags that have the store’s logo or name hot stamped to the side, coordinated bows, ribbons, tissue paper, shredded paper grass, and stickers can contribute to creating the style of gift wrapping your store will be known for. If you have not considered gift-wrapping for your store before, perhaps now is the time. It will really make the holidays special for your staff and spread some cheer with your customers.
