Which Wine Club Is Right For You?

by Jack Terry

Although mail order wine of the month clubs have been in existence for several decades, many of them worked on a limited basis thanks to restrictions placed on methods of shipping and delivery as well as having few avenues to reach out to new customers. They tended to be exclusive enterprises that traditionally focused on a wealthier clientele. I mean, if you are going to think of a truly luxurious indulgence, getting wine delivered from around the world to your house every month is certainly high up the list.

Like it did to so many other things, the internet has done a fair job of democratizing the process of being a wine club member. Now there are hundreds of different clubs to join, and finding out about them is a simple as typing "wine of the month clubs" into a search engine. By being able to reach out to a larger pool of members, this helps many of the clubs drive down their costs, which in turn allows them to open up the selection of wines that they offer. Instead of having a "one size fits all" mentality, almost all of the clubs these days offers several levels of membership, from novice to advanced, which cover a wide variety of flavors, varietals and prices. But the question still remains: which club is the right club for you?

The first issue to address is how you decide what wine you typically drink. Some people have discovered a varietal that they love and stick with, while others prefer to switch it up with the seasons. There are people who have a loyalty to a certain region, like the Santa Barbara wineries, and there are some who want to explore the whole world.

Once you know which profile suits you best, the next question is how much wine do you typically drink in a month? Do you save wine for only special occasions, or do you like to have a glass after work most days? Is wine something you always like to have on hand for when guests come over?

Finally, the last question is pretty straightforward: why are you interested in joining a wine of the month club? It could be so you simply have to take one less shopping trip a month to a store, or because you have started to really enjoy wine and want to see what else it out there. People join these wine clubs for so many different reasons that there really is no right or wrong answer.

Whatever answers you come up with, there is the right wine of the month club out there for you. Regardless of whether it is something as familiar as the same varietal or as surprising as a new country each time you sign for the package, you will be thankful every month that you found the wine club that was right for you.
