What You Might Not Know About Whole House Ventilation

Air conditioners are usually used by many households during both summer and winter seasons. Many households part with a lot of money to pay for the electricity bills because the air conditioners require a lot of energy to operate. The good news, however, is that there are various ventilation methods that can be used, which can help you achieve better air quality within the house and comfortable room temperatures, apart from helping reduce your energy bills.

Two General Types Of House Ventilation Methods

Ventilation involves the exchange of indoor air with outdoor air. The two main types of ventilation are:

- Natural Ventilation - This involves external air entering a house through open doors and windows. It is the most commonly method used to ventilate houses and other establishments.

- Mechanical Ventilation - This involves mechanical devices like fans, whole house ventilation systems, electronics, air conditioners and motors. These devices remove air from a single room. Whole-house-type ventilation systems can eliminate contaminated indoor air and replace it with fresh, filtered and conditioned air. This new air is usually brought from outside and distributed all around the house.

Low quality of air is brought about by gases and other contaminants that are released into the homes. This becomes a major problem when there is no exchange of contaminated air with fresh air from outside the room. Opening the doors and windows to ventilate the room may not be a possible solution because of the harsh weather conditions outside the home or security issues. This is where mechanical ventilation comes in.

Existing Formations in a Mechanical Whole-House-Type Ventilation System

There are four different formations of the mechanical whole-house-type ventilation systems:

1. Recovery mode ventilation systems - These ventilating systems have a controlled way of home ventilation which minimizes its loss of heat.

2. Balanced Ventilation Systems - These are neutral in pressure when they are devised and set up. They exchange equal amounts of fresh external air with the internal contaminated air.

3. Exhaust Ventilation Systems - These are very suitable for the cold weather. Not much more than a single fan is installed at an exhaust point located at the centre of the house. For the improved design of this system, the fan is connected to the ducting to ensure that all pollutants are removed from various rooms. Vents in the wall introduce the clean air.

These systems contribute to the increased costs of cooling and heating as compared to the energy recovery systems. In the case of these systems, moisture in not taken out of the make-up air before it is deposited into the house.

4. Supply Ventilation Systems - These systems use a fan that pressurizes the house forcing external air into the house and the contaminated air out of the house. The air passes through holes and vents of the house.

Whole-house-type ventilation can really save a lot of money on energy bills. It can drastically trim down the costs of heating and cooling. When choosing a ventilation system, it is advisable to go for one that is suitable to fit for the particular climate you are experiencing at that time.
