The Brass Tacks of Timeshare Exchange

by Erick Arndt

I know a little bit about timeshare exchange after owning and exchanging my timeshare for 15 years now. Learning the ins and outs of timeshare and timeshare exchange has allowed us to not only vacation at some of the top spots around the world but complete the exchanges with no cost. I figured out the system; let me tell you what I know so you can get the timeshare exchange you want.

Proper Preparation: That's what my Team Leader used to say when he was teaching me how to paint a house. It's all in the prep work, son. So my advice to you is to figure out early on what you want to do on the vacation so you can narrow down your options on where to go. Do you want to snorkel, go hiking or just sit by the pool? Some destinations and resorts are fantastic places to relax but leaving the resort can be a little dangerous. And some areas of the world have great snorkeling adventures but not known for them for one reason or another.

Now figure out the type of accommodations you want for the family. Do you need a 2 bedroom or will 1 be ok? Do you want in in-unit kitchen? Do you want an in-unit Jacuzzi? Believe it or not, we are narrowing down the list of resorts. Make a list of what is critical and what is a nice to have.

Pickup your paper catalog or come into the 21st century and search for your resort online. You can narrow the list based on what you've written down so far. Be sure to check online for websites that have reviews on the resorts you are considering. Get firsthand reviews from other travelers to make sure the resorts are of good quality and are safe.

The last thing you want to do before you actually make your timeshare exchange is figure out your departure dates. When do you want to leave for vacation? Flexibility on this one point alone can mean the difference between a "great unit in a great resort" or "an average unit in an average resort". Pay attention to check-in days that the resort offers. If the resort only has check-in on Saturday, you are stuck only flying out on a Saturday only. That will limit your number of flights and maybe some flight bargains.

Now it's time to make your timeshare exchange. You can use your exchange company, exchange with a friend, or use a timeshare exchange website that connects timeshare owners to exchange amongst each other. Not only are some of these websites free which saves you over $250 in fees but they are a lot of fun and you'll never have to sit and wait on hold. If you are having difficulty finding the resort that you really want, consider timeshare rentals.

In summary, exchanging your timeshare is not always as simple as it looks. But the more planning you do ahead of time the more flexibility and options you will have. And that will lead to better timeshare exchanges and better vacations every year.
