Wind Turbine Kits: What Kinds Are There Available?

by Roger Brown

With wind turbine kits, the first thing you need to ask is what types should you be considering seriously to purchase. Like any other type of product for the home there are a variety of options available. Ever since renewables have become so popular, manufacturers have been coming up with more and more of these devices that will work in increasingly high numbers of locations.

When you're talking about when turbine kits though, there are 2 general categories that stand out above all the others. Those are the horizontal wind turbine kit and the vertical wind turbine kit.

The differences in these two devices could not be more stark. Even though they are both wind turbines, they have some huge differences.

The biggest difference is the fact that a horizontal wind turbine has a tail section. That tail section is supposed to direct the wind device into the path of the oncoming and strongest wind. That way, you are assured that you will always be getting the most power you can from any given wind situation.

The vertical wind turbine on the other hand does not have a tail section. It is therefore free to turn in whatever direction the wind happens to blow it. This is very good in that it can switch directions quickly and make power in a variety of different situations. However, it is not good in that it is not the most efficient way to make power from the wind. The tail section that the horizontal wind turbine offers is a strong design concept that you will be sacrificing if you get a vertical wind device instead.

When you are looking into wind turbine kits, you need to consider both sides of the story though. It all depends on where you're likely to locate the device. For example, if you're going to put the wind turbine on top of a tower high up in the atmosphere, then the only real choice for you is a horizontal when device. That is because you will get the most power for your money that way.

If however, you live in a city and your only available real estate for renewable energy devices on your roof, then the vertical wind turbine likely will be your best choice. You really don't have to optimize the wind production in that case because you are trying to achieve power production in a very chaotic wind energy environment. A horizontal wind turbine kits type device would be constantly shifting to try to catch the most prevailing wind. That can only be inefficient from a power production standpoint.

In conclusion, when you're talking about wind turbine kits, you should consider both the vertical and the horizontal variety. However you need to look carefully into the location where you are planning for the turbine to be located, or else you could sub-optimize the type and the power production that you are seeking to have.
