Is Streaming Video to the iPod, iPad & Android Devices Important?

by Anadi Taylor

Over the past few years our interaction with the World Wide Web has changed dramatically. We are fast moving into a generation whose internet experience is not dependant on them sitting at a computer. Hand held devices, such as mobile phones, have become more internet friendly with most of them now having browsers that allow us to surf the web. Not only do these devices allow us to surf the web, we can surf the web while on the move.

With the popularity of more intelligent hand held devices like the iPad, the iPhone, the iPod Touch, Android phones and aPads the expectations of our internet experience have changed again. We have screens bigger than traditional mobile phone screens to surf with, we have user friendly keyboards, we have faster built in internet connections and we have faster, more 'computer like' browsers to interact with.

This has led to a number of changes in the way websites are developed and how they now present information. Not only are websites becoming simpler in the way they look and feel, they are also not so 'graphic' heavy. This allows pages to load quickly on mobile devices, especially those that use low bandwidth connections like 3GP to connect to the internet.

If we look at a lot of modern websites they are actually very simple by design. Google Search is the obvious example of this. Websites like Amazon don't rely on sophisticated designs and intricate imagery, in fact all the colour and artwork is provided by what they are selling.

One of the biggest shifts on the internet is that websites are very quickly changing from being pages of textual information to becoming Online Multi-media experiences. A lot of information is being presented in audio and video formats. This does, of course, present us with a question; Is Streaming Video to the iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch & Android Devices Important?

The answer to this question is that it is becoming more and more important. We are spending less time on websites that do not engage us. If web pages are heavily populated with text we move on to the next web page or even the next website. If, however, we are presented with a video that has relevant information or is fun, we are more likely to stop and watch, even if it is only for a few seconds. In fact, being presented with a Video while browsing on your iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch and Android device is such a novelty that not only do we watch, we tell our friends about it.

When you consider that the younger generations, teenagers to early 20's, main interaction on the internet is through the iPad and the Android Pad (the aPad) it becomes obvious that streaming relevant video to these devices is no longer a choice, it is a must.
