Smokers warned to stub out before heading to Spain
by Paul Drew
Travel Advisers at Co-op Travel branches across the UK are handing travellers leaflets along with their tickets, reservations and currency, warning smokers booking breaks to Spain, that they'll need to stub out on holiday to avoid falling foul of new rules being introduced. For the first time this year, summer holidaymakers visiting popular resorts in Spain will not be permitted to smoke in the majority of shops, cultural centres or on public transport, as the country follows the example of other popular holiday destinations such as Italy, Ireland and the US. Smokers lighting up in smoke free areas could face a minimum fine of €30. Joanne Evison, a Regional Manager for Co-op Travel says: "In a country like Spain, that has previously been so tolerant of smokers, this is going to represent a major change and we want to make them fully aware of what to expect. "This isn't a blanket ban on smoking so people will still be able to use designated areas in larger buildings and in smaller pubs and restaurants that clearly display they allow smoking. The new rules won't impact on their enjoyment of their holiday, but being aware of the restrictions will help avoid any embarrassment or potential fines. "We're also keen to let non-smokers know of the new rules, as they will now find it easier to enjoy a smoke free holiday." The initiative is part of Co-op Travel's Pledge campaign, where travel advisors have made a personal commitment to help protect popular holiday destinations from the impact of tourism. Backed by national charity, the Travel Foundation, the initiative aims to encourage respect for local culture and rules. "Obviously you get more out of your holiday if you blend in with local customs and rules," says Joanne. "Helping holidaymakers to respect the smoking ban in Spain will mean they can enjoy their holiday without feeling out of place." Spain introduced its ban to help tackle the 50,000 smoking related deaths in the country each year. 30 of Spaniards are regular smokers and the Spanish government believes this is the biggest single cause of death.
