Doll Dress Patterns

by JoAnn Gagnon

Doll dress patterns can at first glance appear like littler versions of a design you'd use to make full-size dresses or children's clothing. While size is the greater factor when creating clothes for dolls, there are more matters to weigh - the less perceptable differences of a doll-size pattern.

A less conspicuous difference is that a doll-sized pattern must take into consideration the inflexible make up of a doll's arms, legs and other body parts. One can assit a youngster to dress by showing them the way to bend their elbows or force their heads through a tight neckline. The clothing we make for dolls has to be able to adjust to fixed joints.

The doll's heads are out of proportionality to the size of their necks. The pattern-creator has to take that into consideration. If you are designing your own pattern, you'll want to ponder that, also. As to the neck area, we usually adjust for the unbalanced size of the head by making the neck hole larger than normal. If a sewer would like a greater flat look at the neckline, this goal can be brought about by utilizing snaps or little buttons in the back. The opening is still big enough for the head to go through, but the end result, front-viewed result will be that of a snug-fitting neck.

Doll clothing patterns are made in various sizes to accommodate many sizes of dolls. While you could depend on the sizing to some extent, it's always a very good idea to take your dolls' measurements. Once you've used a pattern successfully, you can use it for other dolls of like size. One could re-use a pattern to make clothes for that same doll. By creating little adjustments, all of the outfits you create can be different. As an illustration, you might choose a variation in collars, a variety of materials or add ribbons to make a distinctive oufit from the same pattern.

To make your handiwork unique, it's a good idea to begin with simple doll clothing patterns. Simple patterns are simpler to change and they are easier to use on various sized dolls. A pattern may contain different pattern pieces to let you create different types of outfits. As an illustration, one could have the option of not putting in sleeves to sew a sleeveless dress. Doll dress patterns that start with a simple concept and then have various choices are normally the most satisfying to work with.
