Secrets to Success in SEO

by Steven Johnson

The secret to SEO is that there is no secret. Search engines compete on their ability to deliver the "best" results to their users. A focused site, properly coded with high exposure is the key to success. It's just that simple.

How many times have you deleted spam emails from a SEO "expert" telling you that they have the answer to getting your site ranked in the top ten on Google? Or have you fallen for it and contacted them? Their offer is that for lots of money down, consistent funding and a time investment of at least 4-6 months, your site will move up in page rank. Sometimes it works minimally, most often, not at all! Over the past 6 months, Google has taken drastic steps to weed out the "optimization schemes" and deliver the best content to its users.

First, you must understand what does not work. Simply having an appealing, well-optimized site is no longer enough to compete. From an optimization perspective, you need to generate backlinks that Google respects as "popularity" points. The more sites that "vote" for your site, the higher the popularity score; one of the most important Google variables.

However, many of the SEO firms will use Link Exchange Farms (sites that allow users to link with others on a quid pro quo basis) and Google will actually penalize these backlinks. Outbound links to sites that are not relevant or lead to sites with low PageRank scores will also negatively affect your rankings.

You and Google share the common goal of getting your site in front of your target market; those most likely to send money your way in one form or another. Understanding the rules, and how you will be judged helps Google match up buyers and sellers.

The secret to SEO is that there is no secret to SEO.

Optimizing towards the best keywords, depending on prospects to type in those words, and hoping that your site comes up high on a search with tens of thousands, or even millions, of competing sites is folly. You need to generate interest in the places your target market works and plays in order to generate inquiries from qualified prospects.

The best way to accomplish this is through Syndicated Article Marketing. Writing a 500-word article about a part of your business is easy. Submitting your piece to thousands of content-hungry sites and publishers / distributors is easy, resulting in relevant backlinks to your site for every article published. Combined with proven subject lines and proper syntax, your articles will be published, read and acted on by your prospects.

Create several statistically different articles based on the one article, effectively sending different articles to each venue. Backlinks from sites displaying dissimilar content carry more weight than backlinks resulting from the exact same content. Additionally, statistically different articles have a greater chance of showing up on the Search Engine Result Page, expanding your exposure to your target market. Obviously, Google cannot display the same exact article, repeatedly, in the search results. Another major benefit to Syndicated Article Marketing is that the same article (with the variations) will show up on a wider range of search terms.

Combining syndicated articles with a consistent press release program will boost your company's visibility. This is especially important for small businesses, but even large corporations need to fight for consumer mindshare. By sticking to a long-term article distribution strategy, you let customers know who you are, what you do, and why they need you. You also gain the attention of journalists, and over time, they start to trust you more and give you more media coverage. Well-written articles will establish you as an industry expert. Expertise helps you gain the trust of your customers. Once they trust you, they are more likely to buy from you. Being an expert is also good for media relations. Whenever the media requires someone to comment on a story related to your industry, you want to be the one called upon.

Don't be misled by web companies that promise results for lots of money. Worst case, it will cost you ranking and time. For a minimal investment of time and effort, a well-written syndicated article submission campaign can bring SEO results virtually overnight. But most importantly, you are aggressively going after your prospects instead of hoping that they passively find you in the search engines.
