Quiet Your Saboteur And Commit To Healing Your Work Life With The Wealth Magnet System
In almost every case, we know what is best for us in our lives, from the relationships we create to the food we eat. Still, somewhat mysteriously, it is often difficult to remain consistent in making choices for ourselves. We find ourselves hanging out with someone who leaves us feeling drained or choosing to eat fast food over a salad. We go through phases where we stop exercising, or getting enough rest, even though we feel so much better when we do. Often we have no idea why we continue to make the less enlightened choice, but it is important that we delve into ourselves to find out.
It is easier to blame someone else for our misery than it is to accept responsibility for the choice we make in regard to our work life balance. We may say it’s because we don’t have the time or the energy or the resources, but the real truth is that when we don’t take care of ourselves we are falling prey to self-sabotage. Self-sabotage happens unconsciously, which is why it’s so difficult to see that we are doing it. The important thing to realize is that the very part of us that resists our healing is the part that most needs our attention and love. Even as it appears to be working against us, if we can simply bring it into the light of our consciousness, it can become our greatest ally. It carries the information we need to move to the next level in our healing process.
Much like the woman who returns to her abuser, or the alcoholic who returns to the bottle, the epidemic of work addiction is taking a toll on most industrialized countries. Every day that we choose to support the common corporate culture of “compete for more or die”, we devalue the essence of our humanity. The other side of this issue comes from people who would have us believe that if we stop working all together and just “visualize our own success” we could “have it all” as if by magic. I propose between the Martyr’s and the dreamer’s, neither hold the key to the issue of work life balance. As they are both extreme by nature, and offer no balance at all.
Rather than dividing ourselves by one camp or the other I suggest we reside in the middle, by committing to what works. As a single parent I have never done what the masses do. I love to work, but I require simplicity and balance in order to enjoy the fruits of my labor, working from home provides for both. And I do not see giving up a gas guzzling SUV as a sacrifice, any more than cooking from scratch, or discount shopping. Getting “rich” is not the goal, creating a “rich life” is. In my 25 years of working for others, I have lost count of the number of people I have seen live with little “quality”. Most are living a life of quiet desperation in fear of loosing it all because they have built on sand. Out of shear fear, they refuse to look within and continue the treadmill to “success” only to find they end up having accumulated much and lived very little.
Recognizing our choices will lead us to truly finding the answer to the work life balance issue. Be gentle with yourself in the process, take the time to ask “how do I know what I want” and the answers will begin to show up, and commit to taking actions one step at a time to fulfill your desire. Expect withdrawal symptoms when stepping out of corporate culture, and avoid the tendency to beat yourself up in the withdrawal times; those voices are a natural part of the process when giving up any addiction. No one ever died from balance, but be prepared to get a life! You will have to replace those 70 hour work weeks with joy evoking activities, and you will have to replace your work excuses and discover your authentic self, or maybe you will have to face the reality that your relationships will have to be redeveloped. The fog will begin to clear and you will begin to find true happiness, this is when you will have to show real courage when the saboteur shows up, stick to your resolve and don’t worry about what anyone else is doing or saying, just practice until the withdrawal disappears.
When we recognize that we are not making wise choices, we might even say out loud, “I am not taking care of myself.” Sometimes this is the jolt we need to wake up to what is actually happening. Next we can sit ourselves down in quiet reflection, with a journal, or with a trusted friend to explore our inner guidance more thoroughly. Just shining the light on the source of our resistance is sometimes enough to dispel its power. At other times, further effort is required. Either way, we need not fear these parts that do not want to heal in our work life. We only need to take them under investigation and bring them with us into the light of all that is possible.
