On The Rescue- Emergency Air Ambulance

by Marcella Hines

No person would want to think about the possibility of an accident so severe that even a regular ambulance is too slow, however it happens. The good news is there is an alternative, an air ambulance flight. Emergency air ambulance crews train for such circumstances, and when they arrive on the scene it is exactly what the doctor ordered.

The Reason to Use an Air Ambulance

Air ambulances are usually dispatched for numerous reasons; speed is just one of them. In terrain where common ambulances wont be able to navigate, where obstacles occur to road bound traffic or when the distance is way too great for useful evacuation and air ambulance flight would be the best alternative.

A Short History of Air Rescue

As is the case with many medical innovations, air rescue was developed by the US Navy and Army. During World War I initial attempts to utilize airplanes to evacuate injured flight crews were met with mixed critiques. The airplane itself was still in its childhood and reliability wasn't perfect, but the concept continued to develop even after the war ended.

Through the entire 1920s and into World War II, planes were prepared to carry stretchers. They brought hurt out of the field correctly but had limited use since they needed some form of runway to get airborne. It was at this time that helicopters were first hired to the air ambulance service, and by the time the US was involved in the Korean war, 1950-1953, helicopters became the vehicle associated with preference.

Currently, both planes and helicopters will be used for air ambulance flights. Emergency air ambulance services usually are based upon need and application. Fixed wing aircraft, especially large scale planes, are called into service mainly when then the operation involves many injured. These particular craft are staffed by entire medical teams which enable it to transport patients over long distances while providing medical care to many simultaneously.

Air Rescue Accreditation

To fly an air ambulance pilots are necessary to have major experience. As the conditions surrounding an air ambulance flight can be much harder than a traditional fight, accreditation is strict and standards high. The Commission on Air Medical Transportation Systems (CAMTS), that provides accreditation in the US, determines the level of training and equipment required by pilots, aircraft and personnel. While such accreditation will be voluntary, numerous jurisdictions now require it as a stipulation of licensed.

Innovations in flight and medicine will continue to improve the standard of care available through the use of the emergency air ambulance.

With the awareness of the importance of air ambulance services, many companies and organizations that offer these services have increased in number. Over the years, the services have been provided to different types of patients, with different ailments and accidents at different locations. This has seen the reduction of the mortality rates of the patients in question.

One of the things that a person needs to look for when considering Emergency air ambulance is the type of services they offer. Some of these service providers will work to transport the patients to the nearest hospitals for further treatment and will include staff like paramedics. Other companies offer the medical practitioners including physicians, flight nurses who will be at the scene to offer treatment if extreme cases of surgery is needed. After the treatment, the patient will use a different form of transportation to the hospital. The selection of these service providers will depend on the situation the patients are in.

It is important that the users of these services ensure that they have selected a provider who has the best equipment that is state of art to ensure that the patient will receive required treatment. They should also have a team of well-trained, certified and experienced staff members, ranging from the pilots to the paramedics. This will ensure that the patients situation is controlled to prevent of from worsening and that the staff can make the right decision according to the circumstances.
