Tips For Keeping Your Carpet Cleaner This Summer

by Sarah Simmons

Clean carpets can make or break the look of your house. Because summer is a time for being outdoors, dirt and grime gets tracked in more than any other season. Don't be caught off guard this summer season. Read more for tips on how to keep your carpet cleaner than ever this summer.

Shoe away dirt

Dirt tracked in from outside is one of the biggest perpetrators of getting your rug filthy. During the summer when you, the dog, and the kids are all in and out of the house, running in for a quick drink before dashing back out to put the last touches on the latest fort, taking the time to remove your shoes seems like a quite a daunting task. However, this one tip, if adhered to, can have some of the best effects for keeping your carpet cleaner.

Talk about a green carpet cleaning solution, not only will your carpets be free from the inevitable dirt, gook, gunk, and muck tracked in from shoes, but they will also be free from the wear and tear that even brand new out-of-the-box shoes bring to carpets. If you have ever seen the effects of a lot of foot traffic on grass, the same happens on carpets, with shoes exacerbating the situation. That's why it's a good idea to transform your house into an Asian style one - shoes off at the door and slippers on while you're in the house. I walk around outside barefoot quite a bit. You wouldn't have to try very hard to make the argument that my feet are dirtier than my shoes. That's why you should wear clean, only-for-the-house slippers to keep your carpet cleaner and dirt free to maximize its lifespan.

Another line of defense

Unfortunately, as great of a job as the previous tip is for keeping your carpet cleaner than ever, it's a little optimistic to think that nobody will wear shoes in the house. Whether it's that pesky neighborhood kid, an unruly in-law, or your husband, it's inevitable. Fortunately, there are measures that can be taken to combat the unavoidable.

Doormats at all entrances to your house kindly remind people to take their shoes off or at least wipe their feet before entering. When I go over to someone's house, my mind is often consumed by not committing some other egregious faux pas and the shoe thing slips my mind. Yet often when I see that mat I suddenly remember and kick them off -just wish I had remembered to wash my feet.

Also, high traffic areas will often succumb to wear and tear, like my grass example, even if everyone who enters the house is gliding around on slippers. Runners on high traffic areas keep the carpet cleaner underneath and protect the carpet from moisture. Protectors to keep your carpet cleaner are a good idea as well for food areas. Food and drink accidents are the nuclear bombs of the carpet world and just one mishap can ruin a rug because for some stains, there is simply not enough carpet cleaner in the world. It might seem obvious, but clean it up the best you can as soon as possible and just try to minimize the damage.

Practice Practicality

These next few tips are often overlooked but are very important. Without vacuuming, a little otherwise harmless dirt or dust can get mashed into the carpet and seriously compromise its integrity. This doesn't have to be done every day but once a week will keep your carpet cleaner and healthier. Spreading some baking soda a little before each vacuuming is also a good idea. Baking soda absorbs odors and doesn't just mask it like many carpet cleaners.

These tips will not only make your carpet look much cleaner, it will bring it back to life and make it last much longer. They are easy to use and simple to try and can have immediate, noticeable impact. Implement these tips today to keep your carpet cleaner this summer!
