Lease a Copier: Paper's Not Going Anywhere This Century

by Mark Etinger

In this rapidly digitizing world, some may think that printers and copiers will soon be extinct. Doubt it. In the same way that books aren't going to become extinct, a copier rental is not going to become an endangered species. Why? Until disposable digital screens are invented, paper is simply easier. And in the way books will always be collector's items, paper will also remain a favorite for those who appreciate texture and quality. The fact that paper has been one of mankind's most important inventions, up there with the wheel and the printing press shows that it will never die off entirely. Plus, it's hard to imagine showing a digital image of your passport at the airport when trying to enter or leave a country. When you want to show someone official proof of something you need a physical copy, not just an email copy. And chances are that will stay the same for a while to come.

Even in the office, making a couple of copies with a copier rental is a much more practical and official way of sending a document than email. Take a classroom for example. The teacher wants to hand out tonight's homework. Well let's say that in the near future, technology will improve to the point where teacher will be able to download tonight's homework onto everyone's electronic computer tablet. How do they show their work with a keypad? Isn't it simpler and more efficient to just use a piece of paper and pencil? And even after taking into account how much less expensive it is to make photocopies with a copier rental than to provide tablet computers for a group, it is important to consider perhaps the most important aspect of paper - its physical qualities.

Paper is lightweight, easy to hold, carry, and reproduce. But the feeling of paper between your fingers is a much more comforting one than carrying a six ounce steel sheet. It is part of the same argument given for retaining books despite the prevalence of e-books. Something about paper keeps us in touch with nature and a simpler time. Some may call me resistant to change but I think that there's something beautiful about preserving tradition. So maybe my great grandkids will use a stylus and tablet for their math homework, but I bet you that my kids and even my grandkids will continue to use paper, pencils and copier leases.
