Different Shapes and Cuts of White Gold Diamond Engagement Rings

by Mark Etinger

When it comes to buying diamonds engagement rings things can get tricky. Even if you go to reputable jewelers, it's going to be a difficult task finding the right ring for your girlfriend. You want it to be perfect and something she'll love to wear every day. It is often a choice based on aesthetics, but it's good to have an idea of what is available before you head into the store.

Cuts are broken up into three different kinds and are different from just the mere shape of the diamond. The brilliant cut is one of the most popular, the kind you see in ads and movies. This cut has facets that are shaped like kites and triangles radiating outward so light coming through it can enhance the sparkle.

Step cut diamonds have sloping, four sides facets. There are far fewer facets than a brilliant cut, and often this cut is used in baguettes, which are the diamonds that adorn the center diamond of an engagement ring.

Mixed cuts are a mix of step cut and brilliant cut techniques in a single diamond. Sometimes these cuts are side by side, sometimes they are in different areas. This technique is often used on colored gemstones, but not limited to them.

Some diamond cutters have patented diamond cuts that only their jewelry can carry. Research into what diamond company you are working with and if they have any unique cuts of their own.

After you understand cut, there is the simpler task of choosing a shape for diamonds engagement rings. Round brilliant cut tends to be the most popular diamond cut in diamonds engagement rings.

Square and rectangular cuts come second as far as popularity. You'll find these have their own names for cuts, but don't be confused. Princess cut diamonds are a brilliant cut for this shape, emerald cuts are a type of step cut.

Oval, pear, and heart shaped are three other cuts you can find when shopping at reputable jewelers' stores. Pear and heart specifically can be cut with different proportions, some wider or some elongated. Oval, on the other hand, tends to be a perfect oval and doesn't play with dimensions too much.

Having a basic understanding of cut and shape is going to really help when buying that engagement ring. You want everything else about the proposal to go well, the last thing you want to worry about is getting the perfect ring.
