Get Your Rent Show Tickets - A Must See Broadway Musical!

by Al Terry

Rent is now a must see show. It is a story of a songwriter, with not a penny in his pocket. It is about his love for a young woman, whose illness is increasingly consuming her, but his love for her never diminishes. It is a story of Rodolfo – a poet turned punk rocker. It is a story of Mimi – a dancer at an S&M nightclub, who has tuberculosis, and is now infected, with AIDS. It is a story of a painter, Marcello, aspiring to be a filmmaker. It is plain and simple, a story of love. Love enduring all obstacles.

Based on La Bohème, by Puccini, Rent is relocated to East Village, New York, in the times of AIDS. It is a Tony Awards and a Pulitzer Prize winner, and is one of the first musicals to feature gay, bisexual, lesbian, and transgender characters, on Broadway. It has brought topics controversial to the then prevailing culture, contrary to the then existing traditionally conservative theater scene. Such topics have made musicals popular with the younger generation. Bringing in ethnically diverse cast, including racial minorities, in its leading roles is credited to Rent.

Rent has completed more than 10 years of continuous run on Broadway. On April 24, 2006, the entire original cast of Rent celebrated 10 years on Broadway with a special performance. Its first performance in New York City was on February 13, 1996, at the New York Theater Workshop. Rent, however, previewed on Broadway at the Nederlander Theater on April 16, 1996, and opened on April 29, 1996.

This extremely popular Broadway show has enjoyed great critical acclaim, and years of word of mouth popularity. As on December 31, 2006, Rent has had 4,457 performances, is the overall seventh longest running show, and is the third longest currently running show on Broadway - with only Beauty and the Beast, and Phantom of the Opera ahead of it.

Rent was nominated for ten categories in the 1996 Tony Awards, and won four of them, for:

Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical - Jonathan Larson, Best Original Score - Jonathan Larson, Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical - Wilson Jermaine Heredia.

It won six of the ten categories it was nominated for the Drama Desk Awards, won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1996, as well as two Theater World Awards in 1996 for Outstanding New Talent - Adam Pascal and Daphne Rubin-Vega.
