Foods To Eat When Pregnant: Learn About Pregnancy Nutrients.

by Roger Noonan

Many pregnant women find that they have so much to do when they're pregnant that they will do almost anything to make one part of it simpler. In most cases, this part is pregnancy nutrients. It can be all too easy to pick up a packet of vitamins with a picture of a pregnant woman on the front and assume that it contains everything you need. Well unfortunately this may not be the case. We believe that in order to get the proper nutrients your baby needs, you need to incorporate them into your diet which is why we have written this guide to help you know which foods to eat when pregnant.

There are four types of nutrients and vitamins that are really important when you're pregnant. The first is folic acid. This has been proven to help prevent against spina bifida and the recommended dose is usually 400ug a day unless a higher dose is prescribed by your doctor. You will also find folic acid in certain foods such as yeast extract, specific cereals and green vegetables.

The second is iron. Making a baby takes up a lot of blood and you will be carrying quite a bit more around your body. Because of this, you need more iron to keep your red blood cell count right. Low levels of red blood cells can cause anaemia which in turn will make you lethargic, give you a higher risk of infection and also put more of a strain on your heart.

The third is calcium. In order to get more calcium in your diet you could take a supplement or alternatively you could gain more by the foods you eat when pregnant. Cheese (hard), milk, cream and yoghurt are all ways of gaining the much needed calcium for your diet. Calcium is often drained from the mother by the baby when she is pregnant. Decreased levels of calcium can lead to osteoporosis and bone weakening.

Lastly is vitamin C. Vitamin C is necessary for maintaining your immune system up and fighting off infections. It is also known to reduce the risk of gestational diabetes. You will find vitamin C in most fruits.

So now that you know about nutrients and the proper foods to eat when pregnant. Becoming a parent means that you will always be looking out for your little ones best interests so why not start now with their health?
