What To Do Away From Your Hostel New York

by Mark Etinger

New York City. The Big Apple. City That Never Sleeps. The Capital of the World. The City So Nice, They Named It Twice. Empire City. Gotham. With all those names, just think about how much there is to do in this megacity.

1. The Museums: The Big Apple has some of the best art in the United States. The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Frick Collection are two of the city's best when it comes to classical and modern art. For more contemporary stuff hit the MOMA, P.S.1, and the New Museum.

2. Theatre: Depending on your budget you can catch a Broadway, off-Broadway, or heck even an off-off-Broadway show and be able to appreciate this art. When you buy tickets the day of, they're drastically cheaper. The Ticket Center in Times Square is a good place to check.

3. Food: New York has some of the most varied cuisines in the world. Chinatown - anywhere you go will be delicious. Little Italy is a must for a classic bowl of spaghetti with meatballs. Cuban, Venezuelan, Thai, Vietnamese, Ethiopian, French, and of course American are some other fares you can sample. Cheeseburger joints dot the streets and the best part is that most are open late. Walk down St. Marks to see what I mean, or if you're feeling adventurous, venture to the outer boroughs (Queens).

4. Walk: New York is a very walk-able city. Its neighborhoods are very close to one another and can vary diversely within a few blocks. Sometimes it's worth it to take the subway, such as when you want to go way uptown to Harlem or the Upper East Side, or even when you want to go to…

5. Brooklyn: It's definitely worth it to take a day and walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, hit Grimaldi's Pizza on the Brooklyn side, and take a cab to Williamsburg to walk around Bedford Avenue before hopping on the L train back to Union Square and walk or take the Downtown 6 to your NYC hostel.

These days, this borough is where all the cool kids go to relax, and evidence abounds. Bars, restaurants, cafes and venues (all at affordable prices) make it the place for young travelers.

Try to meet and talk to as many people as possible. New Yorkers are generally pretty friendly, especially when asked for directions; they love to offer their opinions.
