Exchange Platform – The Perfect Social Tool for Vote Gathering?

by Shandra Benson

In the last couple of months, it has become clear that the federal exchange platform is nearing towards a major collapse. The government has spent a lot of money trying to fix the exchange integration platform for preventing the failure, and it has not brought any major improvement in the chances of success. With these sequential failures, the experts and opposition have started talking and questioning the agenda behind the whole health reform at this time.

The core agenda of Obamacare was to make health insurance more affordable, even free, for certain demographics. President Obama made insurance for all and affordability as the stalwarts of this campaign, promising insurance for all uninsured, with no regard of medical history, and affordable health insurance for people falling in certain income groups through the subsidy concept. While people embraced this concept of affordable, free health insurance, most of them did not see right through this concept of exchange integration – it was to add a lot of financial burden on taxpayers.

Now, after the famous debacle of the exchange platform, people have started putting some really uncomfortable questions for the administration. For instance, people want to know why did the Obama administration think of improving health reform and add more financial burden on people in one of the worst financial crunches after the great depression. Why did the government think of targeting the old, sickly people who did not have medical insurance, only lofty medical bills that they could not fully support? The answer lies in a strategy that is becoming clear now, the exchange connectivity is just a distraction towards the main motive of the government – gathering more votes through the campaign.

The truth in this comes from an age old strategy tried and tested by the leaders – implement benefits for the old and they will flock to you. From famous political campaigns of the past which revolutionized the pension system operating in the world today, people have understood that there is nothing more dear to a poor, old man than pension income. It seems evident that the administration has tried to bank on the same concept, and use the health reform to influence the unhealthy, older people to align towards them. However, this exchange integration platform strategy has caused more trouble than benefit, and it is now evident from the outcome of the exchanges.

With the system collapsing, even the old and unhealthy, which were the prime targets of the health insurance scheme, are suffering. Most have not been able to get enrolled in the marketplace and are facing unforeseen errors, duplicate data, cancelled policies and a lot more. So how does the government plan to fix this? It has no idea. In the coming months, the fix to the suffering system will be the key to the November 2014 elections that are looming on the minds of the US politicians already. It remains to be seen how much good the exchange platform strategy does for them.
