Today's New Playground

by Elizabeth Herring

What do you need for a fun filled playground? A swing set? A slide? Maybe a set of monkey bars? These are the things many of us grew up with. These options were often made of steel and set in concrete, and resulted in more than one broken arm or bump on the head. While these playgrounds seemed fun enough when we were kids, like many things we wanted options for our kids that were not only safer but would help activate imaginations of kids everywhere.

Today's playground equipment is more than a few pieces set on blacktop or concrete. These are full scale play structures and play systems that encourage a real relationship between fun and learning. When children play in these new innovative playgrounds, they not only get exercise and fresh air, but they continue to learn valuable lessons, like art, ecology, history, science, and even Biblical studies. Through various tubes and tunnels, rock climbing walls, set against natural and artistic back drops, children experience the playground in ways their parents never did.

Moose Trails playground in Red Lodge, Moose Trails is sure to touch the creative bug in any child. This play structure features beautiful murals integrated into the play space. A rock climbing wall, teepee, train tunnel and musical area are just some of the great amenities that can be found here.

New Orleans, LA hosts the Kellogg Park Eco-Playground features solar powered playground equipment. The play structures at this play space promotes both a sense of physical balance in the children that play there and teaches them local ecology so they can grow up to promote Earth balance as well.

For faith based play, travel to South Dakota where you will find Bible Story Playground in the town of Parker. Kids can experience Biblical stories in an interactive way through activities such as climbing in the whale's mouth, like Jonah or heading into the Lion's Den. There's even a large statue of Goliath that even the most secular person would likely be able to appreciate. The playground was built by the members of First Baptist Church, in Parker, SD but the playground welcomes supervised children from any back ground.

The Imagination Station is located in downtown Brighton, MI and is designed to give both children and adults a great experience. The child's play space is centered around wooden play structures which resemble castles for an authentic medieval fantasy experience. As enjoyable as it is to watch kids interact with the Imagination station playground, the adults get their turn as well. Both Mill Pond and the Tridge are three spiked as favorite places to enjoy a walk. A gazebo is next to the Tridge, where the community hosts free summer concerts on summer evenings.

Regardless of where you live or travel, or whether you have kids who frequent playgrounds you have likely noticed that even ordinary play spaces have become more innovative that they were in years past. Better materials help these play spaces thrive through generations of kids, as they help them grow to build something even better.
