Collagen is a protein that strengthens the skin and stops toxins, cancerous cells and other organisms from absorbing into the skin. It is the protector and holds everything in one place, keeping the skin plump and firm.

Collagen is used throughout the body but most people think of it as more of a beauty enhancement because lets fact it, who wants sagging skin? There are many natural ingredients that can help stimulate collagen production and Shea Butter is one of them.

Shea butter is is derived from the inside of the nut of the African shea tree. The benefits of shea butter are many. It contains superior moisturizing benefits and will not clog the pores. It skin regenerating, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, makes the skin more strong and healthy and of course, stimulates collagen production.

HOW: shea butter is present in many natural body care products. When choosing one, be sure that it is the main ingredient in the product. If you choose to go completely natural you can simply purchase the raw butter and apply it as a moisturizer. It is very thick so use a small amount at a time and rub in your hand to break it down a bit.

TIP: Contrary to what some believe, shea butter is not yellow in color, but ivory. Some manufacturers sell another natural butter from a completely different tree and try to pass it off as shea butter, it is not. When purchasing/using shea butter be sure to get the 100% raw unrefined product. That way, you get all of the benefits it has to offer.

Natural plant-based body care vs. traditional chemical-laden products

Natural body care is a powerful tool if you choose to use it. Sometimes, the most simple plant-based ingredients are all we need to resolve many of the skin issues we incur.

Plant-based ingredients contain antioxidants, vitamins and other nutrients that make them a powerful non-toxic way to obtain and maintain healthy, beautiful skin and have been used by ancient cultures for thousands of years--because they work.

Why are so many body care products plagued by un-natural chemicals?

The cosmetics industry as a whole has very little regulation. This means, they can use almost any chemical, toxic or not, just as long as they are not in large amounts and will purposely harm consumers after a few uses--this is why the long-term use of these products is a concern for many people. These chemicals--such as sulfates and parabens--preserve the product and create the lather, consistency, coloring and fragrance that consumers have come to expect--they're also cheaper than plant based alternatives.
