Seychelles Welcomes New Minister of Tourism and Culture

by Keith Howard

Seychelles Tourism Board CEO Alain St. Ainge spent the better part of 2011 travelling the globe to promote his nation as the premier travel destination in the Indian Ocean. Travel industry experts credit St. Ainge with bringing a lot of attention to Seychelles and boosting tourism numbers for 2011. In addition, the first three months of 2012 were positive as well. Seychelles just concluded its annual carnival which saw participating nations from around the world come together to celebrate their diverse cultures and histories.

With all the accolades under his belt it's only fitting that St. Ainge was appointed as Seychelles' new Minister of Tourism and Culture. He was a sworn in at the Statehouse in the country's capital of Victoria on March 14. Present at the swearing-in was President James Michel, Vice President Danny Fauer, Minister Vincent Meriton, and a host of other government officials. The ceremony was highlighted by a speech from St. Ainge in which he pledged to unite tourism and culture together in a program that will benefit both.

Seychelles culture has been at the heart of St. Ainge's promotional efforts throughout the last year. While his country is typically known for the Seychelles beach wedding, he has promoted his country by presenting her culture to friendly markets like Dubai, the UK, France, Thailand, and others. He has also seen fit to get the ball rolling on medical tourism as a means of competing with Asia and the Caribbean. All in all St. Ainge has been very productive in bringing new arrivals to Seychelles.

For those who have never visited the Indian Ocean nation, Seychelles is truly a gem. Made up of several hundred islands, it is a nation with plenty of pristine beaches and crystal clear waters. Her geographic make-up is perfect for five-star luxury resorts where privacy and intimacy are the norm. It's also perfect for experiencing a variety of different cultures as guests move from one island to the next and engage the people living there. Suffice it to say a holiday in Seychelles is unlike one anywhere else.

Air Seychelles Factor

There was some speculation the tourism industry would suffer when national airline Air Seychelles announced late last year they would be eliminating their long-haul flights. But airlines in Italy, France, and the UK have stepped in to fill out the schedule, thus keeping the number of arrivals at desired levels. If all goes as planned 2012 should be a record year for tourism in Seychelles.

UK and French travellers desiring to holiday in Seychelles this year can get started booking their plans now by contacting their local tour operator. There are still plenty of available beds and flights throughout the spring and summer months. Travellers may also find reduced prices during the slower months of the summer.
