Don't Hire an Unlicensed Plumber

by Anita Sullivan

Finding the right plumber can be complicated. Sometimes, you are faced with an emergency situation and you need to find a plumber fast, such as with a flood. This is not the time to be calling your friends for recommendations. You do not even want to call multiple plumbers. The following illustrates what you should look for when you are seeking a plumber in an emergency situation.

First of all, he or she should be licensed. Some people do not realize that licensing is involved in the field of plumbing; however, it is, and licensed means that the plumber has completed schooling and testing so you know that they know what they are doing. Licensed plumbers have been taught how to complete a job in a timely manner while completing everything right the first time.

In order to become certified as a licensed plumber, the individual must undergo detailed and extensive training. Licensed plumbers are well-educated and understand the many different nuances of the plumbing industry. After schooling, they must train for at least five years with a licensed plumber in many states. By hiring someone who is licensed, you know your specific job will be done right the first time.

Try to know as much about the situation before you speak with a plumber so that he or she can give you the best quote. You will want to have inspected the entire general area of the issue so that you are best able to describe the exact issue to the plumber when you call.

Sometimes, if you know what parts you need, you can purchase them ahead of time and only have to pay the plumber for the costs of labor. This is not always the case, but if your issue is not an emergency, this is usually the best way to conserve on money, especially if you have a tight budget.

In order to make sure that you are choosing the best possible plumber, there are a few things you will want to take into consideration, such as how long the company or individual has been in business, if they have the actual expertise to carry out the desired functions for the job you have at hand, and if they can give you referrals that you can check out. A good plumber will be happy to provide references in order to obtain future clients.

Find out how big the plumbing company is, and if you will be dealing with the same person that you spoke to on the phone or if there is a chain of command and different plumbers. Large companies will cost you more due to their overhead costs.

You also want to be sure that the company or individual has the proper amount of insurance should anything happen to the plumber while he or she is on your property.

When you are given your quote, ask for a written itemization of everything the plumber plans on fixing and what parts will be replaced and why, before agreeing to anything. This can help prevent any future disagreements should the final price be different from the quoted price.

Asking these questions and any others you can think of will help make sure that you get the best possible service from your chosen plumber.
