How to Set Alt Image Tags

by Joanne King

Firstly… Do you know what an Alt Image Tag is supposed to be used for?

No?

Ok, I’ll tell you.

Alt image tags are a small description of what your image is. It is supposed to be used to help the visually impaired.

But it also aids in search engine optimization of your webpage.

Now there is some debate on how you use these, I’ll explain both sides and you can decide which way you want to go when setting your alt image tags.

Let me explain first, how you set an alt image tag.

Start by loading up your dreamweaver program. Then load the webpage that you want to add alt image tags to your images.

Click on one of the images that you want to add an alt image tag to.

To the bottom right of your dreamweaver software you should see something that reads “Alt” and it will have a scroll bar and it should be blank inside (unless you have already entered an alt image description tag).

Here is where you will place your description of the image.

All you need to do now, upload the page and you’re done!

Ok… now back to the debate of what I mentioned above.

What should you place in here?

As I mentioned before, this also can aid you in search engine optimization. So what you can do is enter your keyword phrase in here.

In order to do this, some say you need to place the word “image” after your keyword phrases, otherwise google will read it as “spam”.

The choice is yours :-)

Good luck!
