Books For Yucatan Part 2
In terms of travel, the eReader is definitely the best choice for bibliophiles. Dozens of books can be uploaded, ready and waiting to be enjoyed. However, if you are someone who enjoys the touch of the pages, the smell of the paper, and the weight of the book in your hands, then analog is the way to go. Some avid readers like to make little highlights of phrases they like, even note them down for later. Plus there is definite satisfaction in folding the top right corner of the page, and marking your place. Not many people know this, but highlighting phrases and folding over page corners is possible with electronic books. It's true!
Our next Yucatan book for your Cancun getaway is The Polo Affair by Sean Hennessy. The novel bears several chief characteristics of Hennessy's own life, and perhaps that is why it is such a good read. The story follows an Irish expat living in Mexico who owns a pub, discovers a love for polo and equally falls for the niece of a prominent local polo player, Fernando. This is no romance novel. In fact there are several elements of intrigue we will not go into here, for fear of spoiling the book! Hennessy has a deep-seated love for polo, and interestingly, also owns a very successful Irish pub in Merida (a little town about 200km west of Cancun). It's a riveting book, regardless of whether the romance aspect is fact or fiction.
The Mayan calendar and its prediction of the end of the world, seemed to be the preoccupation of many people, when 2011 eventually became 2012. There are many memes on the internet that poke fun at the craziness of it - or making light of a profound fear. The Maya cosmology is covered here, by someone who is an expert on the topic, and who understands all of the topic's finer points. A collection of data about the Mayans has been combined with ancient stories and lessons from Mayan elders, and is compiled into Miguel Angel Vergara Calleros' book, The Sacred Knowledge of the Maya. Now that the world has not ceased to exist, it does make for a surprising read.
Many American, Canadian, Australian and British expats live on the peninsula, and so there is no shortage of Yucatan books. One thing we like to do when we embark on an adventure is tell everyone about it! Some take to the blogosphere, others choose to write a book. It's worth checking out some of the Yucatan books that have been published to date, whether or not they are in eReader or analog form. You will be rewarded.
