The All New VW Golf Blends Quality And Efficiency

The VW Golf is the yardstick that all family hatchbacks, such as the Vauxhall Astra, Renault Megane and Ford Focus measure themselves against. This seventh-generation car has shed 100kg making it a lighter car than the one it replaces, regardless of being wider and longer and offering more boot space and interior room. It has a sportier stance due to it being slightly lower. The interior has gone throw a complete overhaul, with luxury materials and lots of new technology. It also has an option of a big eight-inch touchscreen and a self parking system. The new Golf is available in two diesel and two petrol engines, giving a smooth and quiet drive. These engines come mated with six-speed manual and six-speed automatic gearboxes.

By loosing up to 100kg, the new Golf feels sharper to drive. The body roll is barely noticeable and there is lots of grip too. The 2.0 TDI engine has a near hot hatch acceleration. If you opt for the automatic gearbox then the DSG gearbox works splendidly, although the efficient six-speed manual is just as pleasant to use. There are five different modes to choose from; Comfort, Normal, Sport, Eco and Individual. The GTI is a sportier machine due to its lower and stiffer suspension but still feel home on public roads rather than a race track. The most noticeable thing about this car is how quiet it is at motorway speeds. The interior is insulated very well from tyre and wind noise providing you with calm and refreshed drive.

This is the same platform used for Audi A3 and SEAT Leon and if we talk about the styling, it looks like VW was very hesitant in making any major changes in the already popular design of the Golf. They are so similar especially the front, that to spot any differences they have to be parked right next to each other. However it’s not that the German car manufacturer has reinvented the wheel. Instead the good features of the outgoing model have been improved and implemented to the new model. The VW Golf has lots of space to fit everyone in it. The boot capacity has increased 30 litres than the previous model standing at 380 litres which can be expanded to 1,270 litres when rear seats are folded flat.

The price starts from £16,000 and considering the quality of the product, it’s very competitive price. VW has used the same chassis used in other models for this Golf which means it can pass on the savings made through technology. All cars get a 5.8 inch touchscreen and DAB radio, while top spec models get a bigger 8-inch display. With every car in the range fitted with stop-start technology and a lots of other fuel-saving measures, this is by far the most economical Golf ever. The cleanest of the bunch is the 1.6 TDI using BlueMotion technology, returning 88.3mpg and emitting just 85g/km of CO2. Volkswagen has succeeded in making a better Golf, and that makes it one of the very best small family cars around.
