Explore The Hidden Beauty Of Key West

by Jack Terry

Key West, Florida has a well-earned reputation as being a fun tropical island to go to when you want to spend nights - and days - venturing from bar to bar with a drink in your hand listening to great live music. What many people do not know is that the lively bar scene is only one of many reasons over 11 million tourists visit the southernmost island each year.

Even though it is a coral island, Key West still has plenty of beaches to choose from. Best of all, unlike many other Caribbean islands, here no two beaches are the same. One beach has long stretches of quiet sand, perfect for reading a book while catching some rays. Another has natural formations, perfect for some easy snorkeling. Still another is built around a historic fort, a great location for people who like to walk and explore while in the sun.

There are plenty of other options besides hitting the sand to get out and enjoy the water. Several different charter companies offer a variety of services, including snorkel trips to the only barrier reef in North America, Jet Ski tours around the island, the chance to try parasailing, and kayak tours through the mangroves - complete with see through kayaks so you can watch the marine life swim by. For people who prefer to stay dry while enjoying their vacation, Key West has a rich artistic and architectural history to explore. There are many different guided and self-guided tours that explore buildings and gardens that are over 100 years old. World famous galleries display works by local artists. And no trip to Key West is complete without a visit to the Hemingway House to see where Papa worked (and meet the six toed cats that still call it home).

No matter what kind of activity you indulge in during the day, it is sure to work up an appetite, and the night brings on a whole new way to indulge. There are over 300 Key West restaurants to choose from, ranging from candlelit fine dining to casual elegance under the stars to waterfront fish shops, all of them offering the freshest seafood available. Each meal is not complete without the signature dish of the island, key lime pie.

These are just a few of the many diverse activities and attractions that keep people coming back to the island year after year. There is so much more to Key West than many people know about. Regardless of what kind of tropical vacation experience people are looking for, it is sure to offer something for everyone. This summer, leave the expectations behind and allow yourself to get lost in the trade winds and tranquility of Key West, Florida.
