Organizing Your Closets With Feng Shui

by Melissa Lord

Our closets are the most common places to accumulate clutter, and yet they are usually the last places that we think about organizing. We tend to fill these spaces with everything that we do not want to see. However, storing items inside of a closet for long periods of time creates a stagnant energy flow and can directly affect the rest of the home. Organizing your closet can improve not only your physical space, but also your emotional life. According to the principles of Feng Shui, closets represent our subconscious. So, when clutter gathers here, it’s often a symptom of a cluttered mind and corresponds to hidden problems that obstruct progress in life, work, and relationships. Here are some simple tips to keep the energy flowing in your storage areas.•Make sure you can easily see everything in the space. When it’s too crowded, the chi, or energy, starts to stagnate and keeps new energy from coming into your life. •When you buy something new, get rid of something old. This will help you to prevent further energy blockages. •Check that the closet doors open easily and fully. If they are getting stuck, you probably are as well. •There should be proper lighting in every closet. A brighter bulb can ‘shine some light’ on any hidden issues in your life that need addressing. •If you are searching for a partner, clear out some space for them. If you don’t have space for them in your home, how will you find space for them in your life? This same principle can also be used for dressers; clear out a drawer or two to attract this energy.•Lifting items off of the floor allows energy to flow under them improving the overall chi.•Do not store anything directly above the door. This creates an oppressive energy and can lead to headaches, poor sleep, lack of energy, or confusion. •Make sure your shoes are pointing in the same direction to keep from feeling like you are going in a thousand different directions. •Just as you should love everything in your home, you should love the clothes that you wear. If an article of clothing doesn’t make you feel good when you wear it….get rid of it. Organize your storage well and go through it often to clean it out. As you let go of the things that you no longer use or love, you free up space for new and wonderful things to come to you. Imagine the possibilities!
