Meditation

by Tracey Jenkins

Often it’s not until we stop that we realize how much our mind and body need to relax. If you stop and take note, where is your mind at right now? Are you fidgeting, or thinking about all the things you need to get done, or are you not really thinking at all because your brain has gone into overload and shut down.Constant pressures are something most of us are subject to every day. If we don’t clear our minds and make time to calm ourselves, stress related symptoms such as unhappiness, forgetfulness and health related conditions start to occur. Meditation can reduce stress, kick bad habits, improve emotional health, allow for a more restful sleep, heighten creativity, increase focus and concentration, enhance memory, boost intelligence, heal emotional blocks and increase motivation and confidence. Not to mention the physical benefits of relaxation. Most people that take the time out to relax and meditate find that the real strength of meditation is the greater self awareness or inner understanding they develop. The journey of self-discovery and personal growth both start with the art of meditation. It is the most powerful process ever encountered to connect with your soul. It has been part of the process of self transformation for thousands of years and what will develop from practicing daily meditation is a calmness within.Meditation is a simple process, however if you are used to being surrounded by a constant noise, action and people, the silence can be unsettling at first. There are different states of the mind. The most obvious is the conscious level. This is where we carry out most of our day to day activities. This is the level where we have lots of thoughts, with very little control or knowledge of how our thoughts are occurring. If we spent most of our time in this state of mind, which most of us do, we would find that we were easily distracted, have difficulty concentrating, probably worry about small things and have little understanding of our true selves. The next level is where we are focused completely on one thing. The thinking, or analytical level. In this state we are most efficient in our thinking and it is the deepest level we can go while still having thoughts. From this very deep thinking we can then go deeper into meditation. We have feelings of "I just know" or be able to visualize goals or experience intense creativity. This is when thinking stops and intuitive experience takes over. These moments are when we reveal our real self. When we meditate a few things happen both physically and mentally. We first focus internally and get go of the outside world. This is similar to going to sleep but without losing consciousness. This allows our brains to move into more stable, stronger brain frequencies (called alpha and theta) normally reached during sleep. When we can reduce our brain frequencies to these levels while staying awake we are able to bring the unconscious mind to the conscious level. This allows us to control and harness the power of the unconscious mind.Meditation is fast gaining recognition worldwide. In America, 10 million people now claim to meditate daily and this number is rapidly growing. Why? Because it works and more and more doctors are recommending it. Meditation was the greatest discovery of the 19th century. Anyone can tap into their own power and bring peace and happiness and success into their lives through meditation.
