What Products Are Most Often Discounted and Why?

Oh goody! Free Stuff!

by Sam Qam

When you go out shopping there is always one word that will grab people's attention every single time: Sale! This little word makes you think of

discounts and savings which you can use to make the most of your hard earned money. But why do companies let their products go for a discount? Surely

they are losing money?

Oh no, no not in the slightest. Most companies buy things in bulk. In fact they do this so that they get a discount from their supplier. They set their

prices to the maximum they can get away with in order to make the most amount of profit. When you see a 'Sale' sign it is most likely either; that the

popularity of the product has waned and the company want to get rid of the stock they have; or that they have new stock and want to make room for it in

their store. Either way they want to get rid of stuff quickly. Here are some examples of the most common items which are discounted:

Cars

Cars are a high value item which, when new can be one of the biggest expenses that anyone will accept in their lifetime. When you go to buy a new car

though, you may find that dealers begin to drop the price as you um and ah your way around a sale. This again is because retailers need to make a profit

on every sale otherwise it is not worth it but they can accept slightly less profit if they have sold less that month or if they like you, one would

suppose.

Perfume

Perfume and aftershave are popular things to discount. This is because the nature of perfume allows shops to sell them at quite a high price to begin

with as they are often designer and have evolved as a luxury product which can demand the price tag. The fact is that they are not that expensive to

produce, imagine the giant vats of Calvin Klein perfume, then think of the tiny bottle you pay through the nose for, so if the retailer wants to they can

sell you fragrances for a lot less. Cheap aftershave and perfume can always be found online as stores try to tap into the demand for designer

aftershaves.

Double Glazing

You may have noticed that when looking for double glazing you often have offers of free windows or free doors. This comes from the fact that double

glazing companies have a lot of competition and would rather make less profit on the windows and retain the profit from the labour as this is normally

quite high. Free window sounds nice though.
