Using Bold Design and Big Style for a Small Bathroom Makeover

by Christine George

In most cases, the trend in newer homes today is bigger bathrooms. However, if you have an older home, chances are you have a smaller sized bathroom. As a result, many individuals today are facing the challenge of remodeling these smaller spaces, and some are facing this dilemma with a limited budget. Sometimes it is a simple matter of scaling down the size of the sink, toilet, and tub. But if you don't have the budget for this, what do you do? You can make a few quick changes by using Moroccan decorating ideas and making a few cost-effective changes to tie everything together.

Apply a new coat of paint - For a quick and inexpensive facelift, repaint the bathroom in lighter colors. This will create the appearance of airiness and space because lighter colors help to accentuate the lighting. If you want a contrast, repaint the ceiling in a slightly lighter shade than what you painted the walls.

Changing the lighting creates a spacious look - Simple, inexpensive updates with your bathroom lighting can make a world of difference where spaciousness is concerned. Using energy-efficient lighting adds brightness and saves you money in the long run. A slightly more ambitious idea would be to replace your frosted window with a glass block window to let in more light and make the bathroom look roomier.

Get rid of the clutter - Install a few accessories that are designed to create extra storage and eliminate clutter. You can keep a wide range of bathroom items where they actually belong by using shelves, shower caddies, and towel racks. Additionally, if you have a regular mirror hanging on the wall, replace it with a Moroccan mirror for added style.

Moroccan decorating ideas - Vibrant colors and patterns make up the heart of Moroccan decorating ideas and create the appearance of space. You can change your floor tiles to reflect this or use geometric mosaics for your countertop. If your budget mandates that you forgo the floor tiles and mosaics, you can find a wall stencil with some type of geometric design and then paint this onto your wall to create a Moroccan pattern or use a Moroccan wall mural that you can install yourself.

Finally, as a finishing touch, use a couple of brightly colored Moroccan tea glasses trimmed with gold and place tea candles in them. Remember that the more traditional Moroccan designs are based around patterns using 8-pointed stars.
