How to Sell on eBay

by Amanda O'Brien

When it comes to learning how to sell on eBay there are two important things to consider:

- The item description

- The photograph(s)

Of course it is also important to be selling the right stock and to have thoroughly researched your market, but without a great item description and photograph you could find yourself struggling to sell even the most popular items at the very best prices. Great photos and descriptions will do wonders to increase the confidence of your customers, encouraging them to pay more for the obvious quality of your service, while attracting more prospective buyers based on the accuracy of your text and the helpfulness of your picture.

With that in mind let's consider three top tips for both your descriptions and your photographs. Incorporate these three tips into your eBay selling strategy and you should start to see your profits soar.

eBay Item Descriptions

- Tip 1 - Be honest but positive. Lying about your items to make them sound better is not a good selling strategy on eBay. It is vital that you are honest about the condition of your goods, while at the same time writing in a positive voice. You do need to inform a prospective buyer of a flaw. You do not need to dwell on it; the positives are always more important.

- Tip 2 - Proofread your text. Nothing puts a buyer off like a description riddled with spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. Try writing your descriptions in a word processor before uploading them to the internet to catch any obvious errors. Also make sure you read back over your own descriptions; if it doesn't make sense to you it won't to your buyers.

- Tip 3 - Include positive testimonials. Why not incorporate a testimonial or two into your descriptions for previous sales of similar products? The reviews could be about the product itself or simply about your impeccable service. Try putting one testimonial at the top of your description, and then a further two or three at the bottom.

eBay Photographs

- Tip 1 - Use a plain background. Placing a product in front of your floral wallpaper to take a photo will detract from the all important item. It doesn't matter to your buyers what your house looks like; all they want to know is that the product in the photograph fits your description of it. Why not buy a white sheet, iron it, spread it over a flat surface and use this as your background.

- Tip 2 - Try to capture as much of the product as possible. Unless you are planning to include several different photographs of different views of your product, you should ensure that your photo captures as much of the item in question as possible. Your main photo should always encapsulate the whole product, or as much of it as you possibly can.

Tip 3 - Use light effectively. Although flash photography can be very useful in illuminating dark spaces, it can reflect unpleasantly off glass, plastic and metal. Instead why not try to illuminate your space with artificial lamps or, ideally, sunlight. This more natural arrangement will show off the products that you have for sale incredibly well, encouraging the visitors to your auctions to buy from you, or simply attracting their attention in a list of search results.
