The Grey Divorce Generation And My Friends Over Fifty
Increasingly, there has been a spotlight on the Baby Boomer generation and the current rates of divorce of the over 50's and 60's. Some Baby Boomers born after the Second World War are now divorcing after over twenty years of seemingly happy marriage.
I have many friends over fifty, and they appear to be divorcing and separating all over the place, even though their marriages appeared contented and happy. With their children grown up, leaving home and leading independent lives, they have decided to go their separate ways and start afresh with their own independent new lives and new directions.
I've noticed a trend in that my over fifty friends are wanting more out of life and are actively seeking fresh and new experiences. There seems to be the feeling and awareness that you only live your life once, and to make the best out of it. Because they are better off financially, having had good careers, stable and long pensions and making the best of the property boom years, they have the choice and freedom to break away and find new directions. There's also some evidence that the Baby Boomer generation are more educated and experienced overall and so they have the confidence and aspirations to actually break away and venture into the unknown.
In previous generations, married couples stayed together because that was the thing to do, and they did not have the choices that both young and old couples have today. Women are also more independent today; they have their own careers and are more educated and are choosing more proactively whether to remain married or to change their lives and do something fresh. By the time they are over 50, they also feel that being the nurturing role of a wife and mother is something that they have fulfilled, and that it is time to do something with their lives for themselves.
As a result there has been a significant growth in dating for the over 50's and 60's as there's been a huge demand for more mature dating than earlier generations. My friends over fifty are once again dating, travelling and meeting new people and pursuing new hobbies. They use web sites that specialise in dating for over 50s and can meet many like-minded people of the same generation, with similar outlooks so more easily than ever before. No longer do they have to rely on discreet newspaper personal ads, and expensive, long-winded dating agencies, they can instantly go online, register with a multitude of specialist dating sites for over 50s and start meeting new people. This is becoming more the norm and mature generations are enjoying meeting new companions and the convenience it brings.
With the huge boom in social media, it's also much easier to stay in touch with people, both old and new friends, so the 'silver surfers' who are over 50 are forming new relationships, communicating and connecting more than ever before.
