The Story of Village Palampur In this chapter we shall read the story of an hypothetical village named Palampur where farming is the main activity along with some other non- farm activities like dairy farming, shop keeping, Small scale industries etc. The village is well connected to neighboring villages and towns like Raiganj and Shahpur. Around 450 families lived in the village out of which 80 upper caste families own the majority of land in the village. The dalits (SC) comprise one third of the village population and lived in one corner of village in much smaller houses made of mud and straw. The facilities available in village are electricity, tubewells, a primary health center run by the government and a private dispensary, 2 primary schools and a high school. The story gives the idea of production and employment in the village of India.

People as Resource

In this chapter we shall see how inputs like education and health helped in making people an asset for the economy and discuss about the economic activities undertaken in the three sectors of the economy, and the problems associated with the unemployed. Finally the chapter ends with a story of a village which formally had no job but later had plenty.

Poverty as a Challenge In this chapter, we shall see that poverty has many dimensions. Normally poverty is measured through the concept of ‘poverty line’ through which we analyze main global and national trends in poverty. But in recent years, analysis of poverty is becoming rich through a variety of new concepts like social exclusion. Similarly the challenge is getting bigger as the scholars are broadening the concept into human poverty.

Food Security in India In this chapter, we shall study about food security in India. Food security of nation is ensured if all its citizens have enough nutritious food available and there is no barrier on access to food. Although a large section of people suffers from food and nutrition security in India, the worst affected groups are landless or land poor households in rural area and casual labourers engaged in seasonal activities in urban area. To ensure food availability to all sections of the society, the Indian government carefully designed food security system, which is composed of two components i.e. buffer stock and public distribution system (PDS) . In addition to PDS various poverty alleviation programs were also started which comprised a component of food security such as Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS); Food For Work (FFW) ; Mid-day meals; Antyodya Anna Yojana (AAY) etc. Apart from government, there are various cooperative and NGOs also working.

All the above mentioned topics are described in an interactive and efficient manner, as per the latest CBSE syllabus of Class IX, so that the students could easily understand them.
