Free Radicals and Their Killers
I turned 50 this last November and have a New Attitude! 50 no longer holds the stigma of 'old' like it did when I was in my early 20's, in fact it's the new 30's!
Looking forward from this vantage point, I’ve begun to place a higher value on the intangibles of life more than I did during the 1st half of my life. Not only do healthy relationships and finances play a much greater importance on the quality of life, but also physical health has taken a more prominent role. Like the old saying goes, if you don't have your health, you don't have anything. As I continue my journey on planet earth, these aspects that I never considered before or took for granted when I was younger, have now become a highly guarded gift.
FACT: According to Paul Zane Pilzer, best selling author, world-renowned economist and entrepreneur, based on consumer spending trends, we are in the midst of a Wellness Revolution. This economic trend is being driven by the baby boomers, those born between 1946 and 1964. Boomers only account for 28% of the US population, but are responsible for 50% of our $10 trillion economy. He says “We are discovering the potential of the wellness industry to preserve what we hold dearest...our youth”.
Two very visible trends are: 1. Boomers are spending billions of dollars a year on plastic surgery, implants, laser surgery (and the list goes on) in an effort to preserve youth. 2. Science is spending billions of dollars in health care research. One critical aspect of this research is - antioxidants and their natural ability in the human body to preserve and improve our health, ward off disease and slow the aging process.
FACT: Antioxidants provide a layer of protection for the cells and tissues of the body, just as a thick coat of wax helps protect a car's finish from oxidation. Specifically, antioxidants are that thick layer of protection against free radical damage.
What are free radicals you ask? People must breathe in oxygen to live. Continuously on the move in the blood stream and transported to every cell, oxygen is necessary for all essential bodily functions. However, a small amount of this oxygen gets loose and produces unstable by-products called free radicals. Body processes, such as metabolism, environmental factors, stress, pollution, cigarette smoke, and many other factors can produce free radicals.
FACT: An overload of free radicals can attack DNA which causes damage to the cells, dysfunction, mutation and ultimately resulting in disease and accelerated aging.
FACT: One of the most experienced free-radical researchers, Japanese biochemist Yukie Niwa, estimates that at least 85% of chronic and degenerative diseases result from oxidative damage, caused by free radicals.
A Bodyguard for Your Cells We need cell protective nutrients that not only help us generate healthy cells, but also protect the ones we have. Blueberries, cranberries, black cherries, and Concord grapes, are rich in antioxidants - they act as bodyguards for our cells. Antioxidants are the body's armor against toxins known as free radicals. The cells in our bodies suffer billions of free radical hits a day, membranes ripped, DNA corrupted, and that spells damage!
3 simple habits to develop if you have not already, that make your body a hostile environment for disease: 1. Go for a 20-minute walk daily and breathe deeply - spring is coming the weather is getting nicer. Nothing starts your day better than a brisk walk in the crisp morning air. Cancer is not welcome in an oxygenated body. 2. Drinking 5 - 8oz glasses of water - Water decreases your risk of colon cancer by 45%, breast cancer by 79%, and the risk of bladder cancer by 50% 3. Add a scientifically proven health drink to your daily regimen - These can really support and fill in the cracks of the Standard American Diet, otherwise known as SAD.
