Visiting Texas, Tamales Is A Must Eat!

When people travel around the world, they try all the different kinds of foods that various countries have to offer. When one goes to Texas, tamales are the first delicacy that comes to mind because they are famous and are a very essential part of their cuisine.

For those who don't know what tamales are; they are basically a corn masa (ground corn transformed into powder form used as flour) with various fillings; they can be of meat, sauces, vegetables, and sometimes, even sweets. The tamales are made of three elements; one is the cornhusk, second is the outer wrapping, and third is the filling. If people choose to make these at home, they can make the fillings out of anything that tickles their taste buds, however, if they choose to buy tamales, they have a wide variety of flavors and ingredients to choose from.

Usually, tamales are easily available at any store; there are companies that sell frozen tamales in different flavors and fillings. However, in Texas, tamales are cooked at home, with ingredients made from scratch. Traditional families choose to go with the original recipes made from lard, whereas, modern families opt for the ricotta layer because it's less dense in calories, and people today have become very health conscious. Companies make tamales for this health conscious demographic as well; they have lard free tamales, which are made with soy-based oils. Originally tamale is 200-300 calories; the healthier option is not more than 60 calories.

However if an individual visits Texas and doesn't know anyone there who will give him homemade tamales, he can always go for the next best thing, which are frozen tamales, which one can buy and cook by himself which taste just as good an fresh.

Outside of Texas, tamales would be considered as an item cooked on special occasions, but in Texas it's an everyday dish and can be eaten as a snack. One can eat it with fork, spoon, or even chopsticks, whatever it preferred. There are many ways to eat tamales; one can serve it with scrambled eggs, or with rice. Some people it with salsa, hot sauce, sour cream, onions and sometimes even fresh fruits.

If one buys the tamales frozen, there is specific way to reheat them so that they taste just as good as the real deal. Either a steamer on a stove can be used, or they can be microwaved. However, the steamer is a more preferred option because it holds the amazing flavors that make the tamales so delicious.

Tamales were first made in 1200-250 BC by the ancient Mayan who prepared feasts. They had their own different version of the tamales which has since been changed thousands of times until it evolved into what it is today. Tamales were considered as comfort food once upon a time, and now its celebratory food as well.
