Texas Holdem Strategy - How Long to Play a Rush

NOT available to public

by Micheal Thorn

Everyone that has played cards long enough has experienced a rush at one point or another. You know, when any cards you look at turn to gold. When you make the nuts straight with 7-2 off suit, and then follow it up with four of a kind 2’s. When even the hand you folded would have won. Although the rush is very profitable, it can hurt you just as much as it helped if you don’t know when to stop.

If you are playing cards with 5 other people you can expect to win 1 out of 5 of the time. So when you win a hand, your chances of winning again decrease to one 1/25. Say you when 3 hands in a row the chances of winning the 4th are 1/625. The odds are definitely against you to maintain a rush. But how do you know when to stop?

I usually go back to my normal game after I have lost a couple of hands in a row. Considering the odds that are stacked against you when you are on one, if you loose a few hands in a row it is likely over. Two of the biggest mistakes players make is to try to ride a rush to long and playing trash cards while on it. Just because you win a couple hands in a row doesn’t mean you should play dumb cards.

Remember, rushes can go just as fast as they come and playing smart cards will be more profitable in the long run than playing cards based on luck.
