Help! I'm Addicted to World of Warcraft
If you follow the gaming news, you must have heard about a year ago about a teenager who committed suicide supposedly due to the addiction to World of Warcraft. Blizzard Entertainment, the developers of World of Warcraft is being sued by the teenager’s parents on the basis of the assumption that their son has committed suicide due to his addiction to the on-line multiplayer game, World of Warcraft. No one knows what caused the extreme step, despite the addiction. Does addiction drive one to suicide…. Especially when the addicted material is available? O course, our heart felt sympathies go out to them for their tragic loss, but then, how many addicts do we have around the globe and how many suicide have we heard of?What does addiction to a on-line multiplayer game comprise of? Number of hours played, number of points scored, success, failure… How do we quantify a game addiction? No information however, is available on how many hours the said teenager spent on the game regularly. Medically, an addiction is defined as “a habitual psychological and physiological dependence on a substance or practice beyond one's voluntary control”. In the above case, is it safe to assume that the teenager did not have any control whatsoever on the number of hours he spent on the game?Comparing this to the most common forms of addiction.. Alcoholism..! The act of drinking alcohol never really killed anyone, or people would stop drinking water. It is the composition and the after effects of alcohol that kill an alcoholic. Applying this theory, the number of hours spent at the World of Warcraft game console could not have killed the teenager. What is it then?Suicide.. a very common occurrence in most developed countries today is said to be caused in most cases by due psychological disorders, commonly depression. It is another matter that treatment to these problems is widely available, but how does playing World of Warcraft lead one to depression? Assuming that it does, it is still very treatable at the very basic level of medical science. What should we infer from the fact that a teenager plays too much of World of Warcraft? Doesn’t this point to the fact there is something wrong with the psyche to begin with? Does the teen in question have difficulties to relate to normal human beings? If yes, were the teen’s parents aware of this? The current scenario not withstanding, it certainly is the parent’s responsibility to observe their child’s behavior patterns and seek medical or psychiatric help at the earliest. Don’t you think so?
