Every day, millions of individuals make online purchases, fill out forms and log in to their online profiles on thousands of websites. But exposing their private information to hackers remains a persistent concern for many users, and as a result, many websites take steps to make transmitting sensitive data to their sites as secure as they possibly can. This increases user confidence in using the site, and in the case of many e-commerce websites, may be the determining factor for whether a visitor completes a purchase. One popular method of securing visitor data is by using a Secure Socket Layer (SSL) certificate, which is a very secure method of encrypting the data being transmitted from your visitor's computer to your website. If you're deliberating whether to buy SSL certificate encryption for your site, there are a few things you should know first.

Do You Need an SSL Certificate?

Whether your site requires an SSL certificate depends on how your site visitors interact with your website. A basic contact form or newsletter sign-up, where the visitor is only required to list a name and few contact details, may not be sensitive enough information for your site to warrant SSL encryption. If your site collects anonymous generalized information, such as through polls or informal surveys, generally this information doesn't need an SSL certificate.

However, if your site collects any personal details about your visitors and their households in user profiles, if your company's employees enter company information over an Intranet, or particularly if you have an online store where visitors enter payment information such as a credit card number, it's a best practice standard to ensure that your visitors' private data remains completely secure and safeguarded. In these cases, buying an SSL certificate for your site assures your visitors that you've taken steps to make your site as trustworthy as possible.

Types of SSL Certificates

SSL certificates have different levels of security and data protection depending on the package you purchase and the encryption rate. The higher the encryption rate, the more complicated the encryption code, and therefore, the more secure and difficult to hack. It pays to shop around with SSL certificate providers. Some very basic certificates offer only minimal domain verification, which some dedicated hackers may find ways around, while others include more robust encryption and authentication services to make your site as secure as possible.

SSL Certificates From Your Web Host

Many Web hosts offer free shared SSL certificates that provide all its users authentication with a single certificate. The Web host's domain name usually displays in your visitor's browser bar when your site processes a secure transaction, but shared SSL certificates may provide excellent authentication and encryption otherwise. If you want to purchase your own certificate, check with your hosting provider first. Many Web hosts offer their subscribers special discounts on third-party SSL services. The advantage of this is that usually, these certificates integrate seamlessly with your Web hosting provider, and in some cases, your Web host may install it for you.

Third-party Providers

You can purchase an SSL certificate from any reputable third-party provider and implement it onto your site yourself. The advantage to purchasing your certificate on your own instead of using a shared certificate or purchasing it from one of your Web host's recommended providers is that you may have access to a wider variety of options, services and additional security assurances, such as a visible seal to place on your site ensuring your visitors of its security. But because installing an SSL certificate onto a Web host may be quite technical, you may have to hire a professional developer to set it all up for you if you don't have the skills to do it yourself.

Whatever solution you choose, securing your site with an SSL certificate is an important way you can assure your visitors their privacy matters to you.
