Out On A Business Limerick - Making Business Lessons Fun

by Peter Williamson

People learn in all different ways, but there's nothing that says FUN should not be part of a fundamental learning process. With that in mind, I challenged a colleague to come up with limericks that might help business owners by providing business advice in a fun format. Virginia Castleman, our Marketing Manager sent these original limericks to me to share with you.

Each limerick addresses a business tip that will benefit all business owners, no matter what the nature of your business is.

Limerick 1:

An entrepreneur I once knew

Sat down on a small tube of glue;

He said he was fine

Though his stuck "bottom line"

Turned his "Don't Get Help" into a "Do"

Tip 1: Asking for help is not a weakness

Limerick 2:

It flies, but doesn't have wings

It hangs on but rarely clings.

It can easily get eaten

While you, Boss, get beaten

By taking on too many things

Tip 2: Effective Systems Buy Business Owners Something They Can't Get Back: TIME

Limerick 3:

A boss and his team once collided,

Though their reasons seemed somewhat one-sided.

"To avoid a collision, you must have a vision"

Now each side is much more requited.

Tip 3: Together Everyone Achieves More

Limerick 4:

"Be the change that you want to see…"

Are the words of Mahatma Gandhi

For your team to succeed, what they'll truly need

Is a leader that knows how to lead.

Tip 4: Effective Leaders Leads By Example

Four key areas business coaches help you strengthen are:

1) People and Education

* Ongoing training sessions for your team

* Develop a system for conflict resolution

* Define your company's rules

* Implement the DISC personality profile

* Complete positional "How To" manuals - and more!

2) Delivery and Distribution

* Go paperless

* Revisit product packaging

* Lead with highest turnover products/services

* Simplify your ordering process

* Regularly measure and record inventory/stock - and more!

3) Testing and Measuring

* Monitor what you're currently doing

* Prune, modify, and increase depending on results of testing

* Keep daily, monthly, yearly records

* Measure each salesperson's conversion rates

* Continuously Measure and monitor the number and origin of all leads - and more!

4) Systems and Technology

* Schedule and complete regular maintenance on all equipment

* Develop an Operations Manual

* Update and use the latest computer programs

* Offer technical training to your team

* Resystem as your company grows- and more!

Now, chances are your business coach won't sing to you, or even say things in rhyme, but he or she will help you put effective systems in place to grow your business.

Okay, it's your turn. What limerick can you come up with that addresses a specific business challenge? Comment back and we'll put your limericks on our blog!
