How To Survive The Great Recession, Internet Style

by Dizzy Bayles

Many have been caught unprepared for the “Great Recession” of the last couple of years. Whether you are a victim of a company closure, a layoff, or declining revenues in your own business does not matter. What matters is what you can do to survive and even thrive during a down economy. Do you have a computer and an internet connection? Then listen up!

The barriers for entry for an internet based business are low indeed; you can start with no financial investment other than you internet service. There are several models for earning income online:

1. Sell stuff(eBay, Amazon, Half.com) 2. Sell products you didn't create (Affiliate Marketing, Network Marketing) 3. Sell an information product you create 4. Set up a niche blog or website and earn income from traffic 5. Use the internet to promote your offline business

In more detail:

You can finally clean out your closets and garage and sell it all on eBay. You can sell your used items, new items you have a source for, and even information product delivered via the internet, if you use eBay classified ads. Amazon has a marketplace for used items, and Half.com, which is owned by eBay, is a thriving market for books, cds and movies. Go to the websites and set up seller accounts and you are ready to rock and roll.

In affiliate marketing, you sell products created by someone else, for a commission. Choosing the right market to be in is paramount. There are also inexpensive ways to break into this model, as well. Your expense to get started can also be zero. Network marketing companies almost always have a web based component, where you might have a proprietary website set up for you. There will certainly be some start up cost for this, most network companies have an initial cost. Again there are free ways to drive traffic to your websites.

Creating your own information product and selling it online is one of the most lucrative ways to earn money online, but not the simplest. You have to determine a niche market that has hungry buyers, as well as one that you either have expertise in, or can learn enough about to create your product. Then you have to attract buyers.

Are you an expert at something? Do people seek your advice about a certain topic? If so, and it is a topic that has a good sized potential market, you could set up a blog or website and sell products that solve problems related to the topic, or sell your expertise as a consultant.

If you are self employed, or have a brick and mortar business, you can leverage the internet to attract customers, either by a website or email marketing. If you obtain the email addresses of your existing customers, you can market to them on demand with internet specials that are focused for immediate response.

So if you are concerned about losing your job, your house, being downsized, or times are tough in your business, get started now! Don't wait until your unemployment runs out, and you are at the end of your rope to get started. Start now, even if things are good, to set up recession protection for you and your family.
