Frozen Shoulder And Rotator Cuff Injuries

by Joe Eagle

Frozen shoulder is a condition where the shoulder joints get locked up and does not have it's usual range of motion. Besides lack of function there is also a tremendous amount of pain the comes with it. It seems to affect menopausal or pre-menopausal women.

Treatment for frozen shoulder can range from chiropractic adjustments, acupuncture to cortisone shots. Almost all cases of frozen shoulder seem to go away with or without health treatments. Some ways to allieviate or manage frozen shoulder pain can be to ice the area, to not apply pressure and to avoid activities that will make it worse such as vigorous pressure or strain. Activities such as cooking, walking the dog or even shaking someone's hand can result in tremendous pain. Often the only way the person can get comfortable at night is to have many pillows supporting them under their back and shoulder.

There are alternative and non-invasive treatments for frozen shoulder such as chiropractic care or acupuncture although it will often require many visits over a few months in order to start to feel some relief. Health insurance may or may not covers these kinds of medical interventions and there might be a limit to how many treatments they will cover in a certain time period. Often an alternative practioner will recommend other lifestyle adjustments or modifications such as a different ergonomic work station or yoga poses to help bring back balance and stability to the shoulder area. They might also recommend some stress-reduction techniques such as meditation, taking warm baths or setting up more boundaries with work, family or friends in order to focus on more self-care and self-nurting issues.

Rotator cuff injuries are also some of the top causes of shoulder pain and shoulder dsyfunction. Often surgery combined with extensive physical therapy is one of the only remedies for rotator cuff injuries. The surgery is quite involved and the recovery is usually six months. During the recovery time the person won't be able to work and will have to go on disability. Their normal day-t-day activities will also be curtailed or restricted. Simple tasks such as cooking, lifting, driving even opening doors will have to be eliminated, modified or reduced. Usually the patient that has undergone rotator cuff surgery will need to have a strong support system at home due to the fact that that normal daily activites will have to be eliminated or modified. Healing from a surgery such as this requires a committment to follow the health treatment protocol.
