Stamp Collection And Other Hobbies

by John Nabeel

A hobby can be defined as any leisure time activity that people enjoy undertaking over and over again and which always brings a sense of joy. There are several hobbies like stamp collecting as a hobby, cricket as a hobby, football as a hobby. But we mostly choose to have one hobby that we like the most. The world of online hobbies includes online gaming, writing, social networking etc. It is indulging to the point that we feel something is missing if we don't undertake it for some time and when we get to do it, it's always great pleasure. Hobbies should not be confused with leisure-time activities like channel surfing on TV, flipping pages of a magazine or taking dog out for a walk! Hobbies are those actions which give a feeling of joy and accomplishment and never result in boredom; passage of time is a mere by-product.

In these days when life is calculated by seconds and a long list of tasks need to be undertaken every day, only the fortunate ones get spare time to spend on hobbies. Even though, one's passion for his hobby can make time for itself from the hectic life. Even luckier are those, whose hobbies become their profession (like sportsmen and artists) and earn them money. A hobby generally reflects and relates to a particular type of personality. Natural apptitude dictates indulgence and liking for a specifc hobby and this occurs unconsciously! For example, social and outgoing type of person opts going to parties while a quiet and shy personality might find solace in watching TV. Access to enough opportunities may also be a key element in adoption of specific hobbies.

It is frequently said that hobbies are chosen at early stages of life. Although it's not incorrect, it is not a law. Hobbies may develop in any stage of life. As one matures and his knowledge, freedom and span of activity grows, he may find himself inclined to new activities. Because of the same factor, one may leave his previously kept hobbies and change them for new ones. This evolution may go on the whole life!

The development of hobbies in young kids is significantly affected by parents. They may encourage their children by providing them the resources to fulfill their interests, or they may take steps to stop them from fulfilling those interests if they want so. Parents may introduce a child to some activity which may later develop as his everlasting hobby. Parent's treatment of kid's hobbies goes a long way in determining his interests.

Hobbies have the effect to relieve the individual from stress. They offer an avenue to push the stresses to the back of the mind and assist an individual to gain his orientation and to think straightly. An element of contest, if present, may add up the spice to the whole activity and increase energy levels for hot pursuit.

Many hobbies can be stated which are normally seen around. Playing golf is usually adopted as a hobby by people who have resources to afford it. It is usually linked with people of higher status in the society. Sky diving is adopted by those who are risk taking individuals with high spirits. Postage stamp collectors are mostly found among school going kids. As postage stamps are a record of a country's history, they may also become a cause of learning. Traveling is adopted by those who love to discover and test new things. The list goes on.
