No boundaries for your business, translation services

by Thomas Lindblom

Nowadays that international business has increased to unprecedented levels; geographical boundaries are seen to be disappearing over the years. Organizations are taking their businesses to faraway places regardless of language and cultural barriers. The need to communicate in foreign languages or to send letters and other legal documents is an important aspect of forging international partnerships. The way business is conducted in different countries is largely dependent upon local culture and traditional practices, so it becomes crucial to the success of the enterprise for each partner to a joint venture to be able to understand the full implications of the communications they exchange.

The raise of translation services online in recent years is evidence enough of the increasing demand for these services. There is also a variety of translation software that provides instant translations of text between different language pairs. However, most of these translations have certain limits, and quite often the translated text output will just be a literal or direct translation, which may not be very helpful to the user.

Where there are cross-border dealings, choosing the right service provider or translator for an organization's business needs is of vital importance to the business. Mere knowledge of a language would not suffice, as the translator must possess an acceptable level of domain knowledge of the business to be able to do justice to the translation work and to understand the nuances of the communication. It would be worthwhile to take a little more effort in identifying a suitable provider with domain knowledge of the business in addition to language translation certification before making the choice.

Competition is fierce among freelance translators nowadays. As more people go into the profession of translation they are all seeking the same jobs with the same translation agencies. Many translators become frustrated at not receiving continuous work from an agency and many can not even get on the books.

Smart translation agencies test the new translators by sending them small pieces, maybe paragraphs of translation work. This is to check their language skills and reliability. Once they have trust in a translator they will send them bigger and better pieces of work. If a translator takes the attitude that such small jobs are beneath them, a relationship will be hard to develop.

Translation agencies may differ on how they like to be invoiced by their translators. It may be a good idea to check this before sending your first invoice. Ensure the invoice has all your details, the job details, the number words, the rate and the total amount owed. Also include information on how you wish to be paid. Always remember to invoice your work promptly.
