Getting Rid of Your Negative Reflection

by Noah St John

I can’t do it. I’m no good. I’m not good enough. I’m too short. I don’t have a college degree. What am I going to do? I can’t do it, head trash. This is going to be the first step to removing your head trash for good, getting rid of your negative reflection. At least first excavating, which means looking at it, it’s hidden in there; remember that subconscious I always talk about, you can’t see it. If you can’t see it how are you supposed to do something about it?

Then we evict it, we get it out. We excavate it and evict it. It’s simple, there are two columns; column one is negative reflection and column two is authentic self. On the left column under negative reflection you’re just going to write what you hear from your head trash. Just write it, you hear it in your head. This constant attacking or criticizing, I’m not good enough, so just write it.

If you have my book Permission to Succeed you see there’s an example of that actually is one of the first people I worked with almost 10 years ago, on this and he was in college, you know, he was one of my college buddies, I gave him this exercise and he wrote a very powerful example of that. He wrote, you’re no good, you’ll never amount to anything, who do you think you are? You’re a liar, you’re a cheat, and you’re no good.

For you write that down, write down your head trash and get it on paper. You’re writing it down, you might even do it, you might hand write it, you might type it on the computer, whatever you want to do, just get it out.

Number two then you take a deep breath or walk around or just get yourself back together and get centered. A way to do that is take a few deep breaths and go all right now let’s listen to this still small voice, that’s who you really are, your authentic self. You write from who you are not that, it’s so funny, because you can feel the difference, if you notice even describing that negative reflection, I sounded annoying, that’s what it sounds like.

The authentic self never sounds like that. The authentic self is quiet, it’s still, and that’s why they call it the still small voice. Negative reflection is exactly like a bully in your head. What is a bully? Loud and obnoxious. You, it’s the knowing of who you are, it’s always, they call it still small, so we have to listen, that’s the trick of the authentic self, it’s quite, it doesn’t, it’s not going to yell at you. We have to listen for it and allow it to come out and create a safe environment.

About the Author

On the night of October 20, 1997, a 30-year-old religious studies major named Noah St. John had an epiphany that changed his life. While attending a seminar, he suddenly realized the real, hidden reason so many smart, talented, motivated people stop themselves from success – and saw it had nothing to do with goal-setting, "motivation" or anything being taught in traditional success literature. That very night, with no formal education in business, Noah decided to form a company to teach people around the world the simple steps that remove the hidden barriers to success.
