How to Fix Roller Blind Mechanisms

by Jamie Simpson

A roller blind that is installed in a window is primarily made of vinyl that is attached to a hollow roller that encases a coiled spring. Over time a roller blind may begin to malfunction. When this occurs you will need to fix the mechanism of the blind. Blind Does Not Stay Down If your blind does not stay down then the internal mechanism may be dirty. To fix this you first need to remove the blind from its brackets. Pry off the metal end of the roller by using a screwdriver. You can also use a pair of pliers. Spray compressed from a can air onto the ratchet and pawl on the inside of the roller. The pawl is a latch or small arm mechanism inside of the roller that engages the ratchet. Apply a penetrating oil to the internal mechanism to lubricate. Replace the cap back on the end of the roller and set the blind back into the brackets. Blind Does Not Rise or Pull Down If your blind does not rise or want to come down they the pawl pin may need to be reset. To do this you need to first remove the blind from its brackets. Unroll your blind by hand until it is halfway down and locate the flat pin that is on the end of the roller. Turn the pin clockwise using a pair of pliers and then release. This pin allows the pawl to attach to the ratchet inside the roller. Pull on the fabric to increase or to decrease the tension. Place the blind back into the brackets. Blind Rolls Up Too Slowly If the roller blind rolls up too slow when it is released the spring has too little tension. This is caused by the shade wound too loosely around the roller. To fix this pull on the blind until it is halfway down the window remove it from its brackets. Roll the blind up by hand and set it back into the brackets. Repeat this process until the roller mechanism acts normally. Blind Rolls Up Too Fast If the blind rolls up too fast when it is released the spring is under too much tension. This is caused when the shade is being wound around the roller to tight. To fix this remove the blind from its brackets. Roll the blind down a couple of inches and then set it back on the brackets. Repeat this process to correct the roller mechanism. Blind Appears Wrinkled or Binds If your blind appears wrinkled or begins to bind when it rolls up then the brackets are set to closely on the wall. When the brackets for the blind are set too close, the spring inside the roller can get damaged. To fix this remove the blind from the brackets and measure its length with a tape measure. Measure the distance between the brackets. If the bracket distance is not correct then they need to be placed further apart on the wall.
