RichKids – DisadvantagedKids?

{{{Rich|Wealthy}}}Kids – {{{Poor|Disadvantaged}}}Kids?

by Wendy Stenberg-Tendys

YouMe Support Foundation, supplier of non-repayable high school education grants partnering with winaresort.com, is raffling a South Pacific island resort, in a world first. They provide giving kids from a Cashless Society,a window to the world.

The Trust funds are invested in high achieving students. They have noaccess to a high school education. Later this year you could become the proud new owners to own your very own private holiday home, plus six holiday units for your family and friends, in Port Vila, Vanuatu. Or you could use the holiday units to have a comfortable tax-free income. A valuable superannuation source. And with the knowledge, that yes, you have made a difference in these children’s lives and the life of their village.

On the northern islands to the north of the Vanuatu archipelago, children sit in classrooms with shutters open to allow air circulation, long wooden tables are desks and an old blackboard is covered with the teacher’s writing. These happy, smiling faces are learning to read and write. They dream of a job in teaching, nursing, carpentry, agriculture, if only they could go beyond primary school.

There are no computers for there is no communications system to these islands, there are few teacher’s suppliesand little writing paper. The government does not provide free education. In a cashless society children will never go to high school without outside assistance as there are no meansto pay for a high school education. After all the ship with supplies might come only every couple of months.

The ‘wet’ season with its cyclones, like Cyclone Funa in January, is likely to terrify the children, destroy the homes and the schools, as well as destroyingteacher's resources. The student’s tummies are empty for the cyclone ruined the village gardens, leaving coconuts as the basisof their diet. Food crops will take 3 months to grow.

With water supplies contaminated by gale force winds driving dirt and debri into the water supply, diseasessuch as diarrhoea and malaria arerampant. More and more kids fall ill each day. Parents fear their children will not live, with nomedical helpavailable.

Yet those who are able, come to school each day to learn, to progress towards their dream of getting a high school education. High school is a distant dream.

Custom-living has been the norm for centuries. There is no money to pay for anything. School fees are often paid with woven money mats, chopped firewood, shells and pig tusks – the most valuable of all custom items.

There is one island that has a bank whose only currency is pig tusks. But how do you find the moneyto send your children to another island, to another community for high school education? How do your children take and active role in the 21st century?

What would you do if your child could not get a high school education?
