Spring Into Shape

Winter is almost over and with summer just around the corner so it is a great time to spring into shape. There is just one thing that can get in the way no matter what the season; the weather. If it's too hot, too cold, too rainy, too smoggy, or even too humid it is really easy to want to hold off the workout until a better day.
This applies mostly to people to workout outdoors but somehow even if you workout inside a gloomy window view shuts down the psyche. Too many of these days in a row and the workout plan is lost.
Don't let it happen. Stay on top of your schedule no matter what. You can't change the weather but you can change what you do around it. With these tips you can combat the emotional urge to let the weather run your lifestyle while still working out safely and effectively.
Gloomy Window Blues
Feeling lazy because the weather is looking awful is truly a battle within the mind. If this is something that really changes whether or not you hit the gym, try some simple stimulants to activate your energetic side.
Music is a popular choice. Have a song or album or even an entire play list designed just for you to get ready to. Why should all of the good music be reserved for while you're working out? Prepare your mood to fight and conquer your workout when you're still brushing your teeth. Suddenly that grey day won't be so all encompassing.
Visual stimulants help to motivate people to workout. Sometimes it's a photo of you in better shape, or someone else, or where you want to wear your new dress. Apply that motivational tactic to your pre-game psyche. Maybe it will be a picture, screensaver, or even video of some warm and far-off place, or maybe a picture of your significant other that you want to impress, either way if it gets you going then good.
It is true that gloomy weather has an effect on your health from a physical point of view. We do need some sun. A few days shouldn't be enough to completely knock you off of you fitness grounds. If it does then you should consider seeing a health professional.
Outdoor Weather Hassles
Nature is not really all that predictable, and even when it is you don't have control over the type of day you get. Be ready to workout in any weather that's safe.
A little bit warmer then you expected? Make sure you cover up in sunscreen, wear breathable clothing, bring water, and wear a hat, workout in the shade and rest if you get too hot.
A little bit colder? Wear layers (you might still get too hot for your long sleeves), wear breathable clothing still, bring water (you still sweat and need hydration), if it's really cold maybe a neck warmer to cover your mouth and nose when you take in that crisp air.
A little rainy? Working out in the rain is fun. The precautions are the same but you try to stay dry and if you can't then you can't. Somehow working out and getting covered in water and mud is so much more rewarding. Watch for blisters or hypothermia if it's cold. If it's just a little spring shower then go out and play.
Outdoor Weather Hazards
High humidity, smog reports, rice storms, wind storms, and thunder storms are times when you should reconsider going outside to play.
Don't let mean weather scare you motionless. You can still workout around the house with found objects for weights, and most of what you would do on the ground you can still do on the floor. Consider the motivation as, 'not letting the bad weather win'.
Stay realistic with your expectation of yourself and Mother Nature. She can't give you perfect days all of the time, and honestly if you work out all year you'll see that most days aren't perfect weather days at all. A non-perfect weather day can still be a perfect workout day. Remember to motivate yourself, keep your body's health interests in check, don't try to face the worst weather, be flexible and have a great workout.
