Google and the Internet: Why is Google so Important?
What is the ultimate goal on the Internet? Is it to make your presence known, influence thousands if not millions, run a profitable business, or even just to get your opinion on something in the open? All of these goals have one nessicary subgoal in common: Google. To succeed on the Internet, nothing is more important (assuming that you know how to build the site in the first place–but that can be bought and paid for) than Search Engine Optimization (commonly called SEO). SEO is the practice of building a web page that is readable and indexable by various search engines and letting these search engines know that you exist on the Internet. The effect that this has is easily seen. Just ask yourself “Which do I use more? My memory, or a search engine?” If you answered that you use your memory more, then you are lying. There is no way that any Internet-savvy person does not primarily use a search engine, even less likely that the same person has not used a search engine at any point. This can be further narrowed down by asking yourself “Which do I use more? Google or another search engine?” If you answered Google, welcome to the majority of the Internet that agrees with you. With Google even integrated into Firefox by default now, it has developed from its humble roots in Larry Paige’s dormitory into a massive Internet superpower. So, you may ask yourself, “Why is Google so important?” Well, the answer to that is clear. If you haven’t figured it out by now, here it is in a nutshell: 90 of a major web site’s traffic comes or will come through search engines (predominantly Google). I have built web sites in the past that have exploded in popularity without any marketing on my end whatsoever, just some basic SEO practices and about a week of waiting.I hope you take away the idea that without good SEO practices, your web site is missing out on thousands of visitors whom would find you through a search engine. Millions of people use Google every day, with an unimaginable amount of queries per day. Why would you turn a blind eye to such a potential visitor–and revenue–source, when good SEO practices are a much easier alternative?
